My 2005 Corolla owner's manual says that the cabin air filter is located
behind the glove compartment. You have to remove the glove box to change it.
The 2004 model might be different though.

Typically, they're located somewhere near the cowel panel on the passenger
side of the vehicle. You may have to access it from inside the cabin,
under the dash, take off the cowel panel itself, or gain access from
inside the engine compartment. You can try the AutoZone repair guides at:
http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?UseCase=RG001&UserAction=beginRepairGuide
You can check out pricing there, or try napaonline.com or genuineoem.com
Hope this helps!!

Once you've done the job, you'll find there is no need to remove the glove
box. The trick is to start rotating the filter element 90 degrees AS you
are withdrawing it from the air plenum. Then you can slightly bend the
filter element OVER the back of the glove box and take it out completely.
Note there is an outer facing surface (the filter is slightly rectangular).

The first time I replaced the one in my Corolla, was at 17,000 miles. It
was choked with bits of leaves, bugs, butterfly wings, and lots of silty
dirt. The filter was about $19 US for the part.
