Goldwaters comments on that subject came nearly ten
years later, long after France left French Indochina to the
communists and before it became known as Vietnam.

Everybody knows of Goldwater's statement of nuking
Vietnam, but Nixon was also proposing this, behind closed doors,
but Kissenger talked him out of it and of course the Domino theory
never did materialize. Thank God fascist kooks like Goldwater and
Nixon were never elected or had some sane people advising them.
It's also common knowledge that Nixon was clinically insane by
the time he left office.

In his last days he slipped into a deep depression , alcoholism
and heard voices of dead presidents. He was mentally unstable,
and unfit to stand any trial, that was part of the argument as to
why Ford pardoned him.

Tom watched the movie Nixon by that great director Oliver Stone. Tom
gets his "facts" from movies and TV programs and also that Moore fellow.

Never saw that movie. What did Stone say about Nixon that was wrong?

Did Moore make a movie about Nixon also?

He sure doesn't based his posts on anything that is out in the

ToMh wrote:\

Come on Scott. Vietnam was a mistake and un-winnable.
Blaming losing that war on the Democrats is just plain silly.
It was a non-partisan screw up.

Who got us in that war,
which administration was calling the shots?
Which president got us out?

You can look this all up yourself, but here's my quick timeline
of Vietnam. I suggest you do some reading on your own.

Eisenhower proposed the "domino theory" and started sending "Advisors",
"Operatives", money and weapons to S Vietnam. The first
Americans als are killed during this time.
Kennedy pretty much continues the policy of Eisenhower.
The "Gulf of Tonkin" resolution, which was passed almost unanimously
by both the House and Senate gave the white power to wage
war with Vietnam without a declaration of war, which
Johson did. In Johnson's 2nd
term he ran on a platform of de-escalating the war in contrast to
the Republicans stance of escalating the war. Despite his
stance on de-escalating the war, troop levels reach 200,000.
Nixon Escalated the War with a policy of " Bombing them back
to the stone ages" which included covert bombing operations of Cambodia
without the knowledge of Congress and despite Cambodia as
being officially recognized as neutral.
After 2 or 3 years Nixon begins to reduce the troop count and proposes
turning the war over to the S. Vietnamese. Nixon and Kissenger
know that they can not win but do not want to be the president
that loses the war, so while reducing troops, he increases bombing.
Finally after years of unraveling support by the American public,
fueled
further by the My Lai massacre and the killing of students at Kent
State,
Nixon finally comes up with an exit strategy. Nixon signs a "Peace
agreement"
with Le Duc Tho and claims "Peace with Honor"
Nixon then ends the draft and pulls troops out of Vietnam. Within
two year North Vietnam takes over Saigon and all of Vietnam

Tom,

Your oversimplification of the Vietnam war is illuminating your lack of
knowledge of this subject. Go here and read up on it:

http://www.pbs.org/battlefieldvietnam/timeline/index.html

There are a number of other sites available to you. I was there and
don't really care to relive the Vietnam war again, but for your sake and
others who are interested, at least give some accuracy and depth to your
comments.

I believe that timeline leaves out some important information. The US
under
President Eisenhower furnished the French with airplanes, taught them to
fly, and I believe we dropped some supplies onto Dien Bien Phu for the
French forces. Involvement extended clear back to President Truman. See
http://www.afa.org/magazine/aug2004/0804dien.asp
And by the way, I have gone to hospitals with chest pains as VP Cheney
did, and it turned out to be a bad case of reflux.

Reflux is often mistaken for a serious heart condition. But a cold????

If your father has chest pains and shortness of breath, as did
the VP, I suggest you take him for immediate medical attention at
a facility that has a heart/lung machine, not give him cough

Mike, if you think it was bad now, we have 4 more years to listen to him.

It's easy to correct. K-file.
