ABC News and TIME Magazine to Report Special Series on Traffic on
American Roadways

ABC News and TIME Magazine to Report Special Series on Traffic on
American Roadways

Being stuck in traffic has become a fact of life from coast to coast.
From 1980 to 2000 the total population grew 24% but total vehicle
miles traveled grew 80%. The number of vehicles per 1000 persons rose
14%. Can anything be done? Is bad traffic here to stay?

Beginning Sunday, February 13th, ABC News and TIME Magazine will
report a special series on traffic on America's roadways. Reports will
be featured throughout "Good Morning America Weekend," "This Week with
George Stephanopoulos," "World News Tonight Sunday," "Good Morning
America," "World News Tonight with Peter Jennings," "Nightline" and
"World News Now." Additionally, ABC News Now, ABC News Radio and
ABCNEWS.com will focus on the topic throughout the week and ABC
affiliates nationwide will participate in this special coverage.

Peter Jennings will also anchor "World News Tonight" from Houston,
Denver and Seattle February 14-17. From the road, Mr. Jennings will
report on some of the unique traffic challenges facing these
communities.

TIME Magazine will focus its report on innovative solutions to the
traffic crisis.
The coverage will include the release of an exclusive ABC News/TIME
Magazine/Washington Post poll on the American public's traffic
experiences, concerns, and their views on possible solutions.

Each ABC News platform will air stories on different facets of the
problem, including:

o The economic impact of traffic on communities and
commuters
o Technology on the horizon that will ease the traffic
crunch - building smart highways and cars
o Lessons we can learn from overseas and mother nature
o How to make the most of your time in the car
o Population growth and the future demands on the nation's
highways
o How did America's roads get so clogged and is it too late
to fix the problem?
o America's love affair with their cars
