stuck windows ..not a fuse |
|
|
HI
I have a 1992 318i 4 door...The front and back windows wont
work...it's not a fuse because I checked em all. I took the car to a
bmw shop and they asked if I had jumped someone with the car ( which I
had), and told me the controller unit was bad, and It would be about
400$ for the part and about 3 hours of labour....does this sound
right? Does somebody know where I could get the part cheaper?
Thanks
B

Well, it depends on where you are located. If you are in US, you could try
Pacific BMW or Circle BMW. They tend to provide original BMW parts
considerably cheaper than my local dealer.

92 should have a circuit breaker in the dash, just above the driver's right
knee (assuming LHD). Push it in and see what happens.
Otherwise, it also should have a comfort relay, that allows operation of the
windows after the ignition is turned of, until a door is opened. If that
relay has failed, the windows won't work. Comfort relay is a blue relay
located by the steering column.

I went to the car wash a few months ago - and several times since - and the
window went down, and stayed there. It would not go up. Obviously, I had to
abort the car wash.
I went home and played with the window switches. I swapped the driver side
and passenger side switches, and the window worked. I swapped back, and the
window still worked. It still works today.
