Hi
2 weeks ago, I took my brand new Camry to the dealer for an oil change.
Didn't check the oil level while cold till 600 miles later. Did it this
morning and the level is way high - about an inch over "F" mark, they
clearly overfilled it..
From what I heard this can blow the seals or worsen the lubrication of
the engine. What shoul I expect ? How to check for possible damage and
what to do about the dealership ?
I'm really pissed off and worried - any advice is greatly appreciated.
Will take it to the dealership tomorrow and really need to figure it out
TIA
Alex

Call the dealer before you drive it in. They may not want you to start the
engine.

It all depends on exactly how /much/ they overfilled it - make sure
you (or a trusted third party) is watching to see exactly how much
extra oil they drain out of the engine. And drain it into a pan, not
one of those roll around tank-on-a-stand type basins, it's easy to
disguise how much oil was in there by draining some off into the catch
tank at the bottom.

If they only went 1/2 Qt to 1 Qt over, there's probably no damage -
except for brain damage of the technician who did the work - they know
it takes (for example) only 3 1/2 quarts with a filter, not a full 4.
All they did was waste a pint, and it would not have hurt anything.

Now if the two different workers each filled it with a bulk oil
meter gun and put in 3 1/2 quarts TWICE, or had the gun set to Land
Cruiser F-motor and put in 8 1/2 quarts, you can have some serious
problems - that will get the oil level high enough to get up into the
cylinder bores and overload the rings, blow out oil seals, or do other
nasty things.

Just call in the morning, and let the dealership managers decide if
they want to send out a free tow truck for you, or have you drive it
in. And get an admission in writing on the work order exactly what
they did - if there are any problems, they'll probably be long delayed
in showing up, and you'll need that receipt as evidence of their prior
screw-up.

Unless they really overfilled it (more than a quart over) and it
blows up on you in the next few weeks, forget about them doing
anything expensive to "check for damage", or swapping out the engine
for free. They aren't going to tear down the engine to inspect
anything unless there are clear signs of a problem.

But if you start gushing oil out of a popped seal and they try to
stonewall and say "What Problem? There is no problem!", your only
recourse may be in the courts. And even if nothing goes wrong you
will know you don't want their shop touching your car ever again.

If enough people get burned by that dealer and avoid them, and tell
all their friends to avoid them, and they tell their friends..., the
dealership (or at least the current owners and managers) will soon be
a distant and bankrupt memory.

1" over full isnt going to hurt anything. As for blown seals, its an old
wives tale like "vapor lock". Now if it was in fact, way over, ie 3" or
so, you may get some whipped oil (foaming) but to blow out seals is not
so. It would have to be way over full to blow seals. Just take it to the
dealer, have then drain it off. You'll find it may be about 1 qt over.

When they fill up my '92 Corolla Wagon at the dealer it is always over
the full mark.

I suspect they put in 4 quarts...when it really takes 3.5 quarts.

The car has 180,000 miles on it now and still going strong.

Thanks everyone for being helpful.
What I haven't realized that according to the Camry's manual you are
supposed to check oil level "with engine at operating temperature",
thus my level reading in the morning was off.
Checking it after driving and waiting 5 minutes the level is a still
over "Full" by about 1/4 inch but I guess its ok. Lesson learned.

UPDATE - went to the dealer this morning. Service manager said

something about a problem with the filling gun at that station.

OK I asked them drain ALL the oil to see by how much they overfilled.
They found 5 quart bucket, and drained the oil in there and it filled
completely. Unless I'm wrong there's still some oil left in a filter.
Say 1/2 quart. So total oil - about 5.5 quarts.

Its a Camry LE (4 cylinder) and stated oil capacity is 4.8 quarts with
filter, (funny they coudn't seem to remember that at the dealershp,
esp. service manager ...) Less than a quart overfill I guess.
They wrote a letter acknowledging the screw up. Hopefully no harm done.

Alex, leave it, 1/4" is no harm. In fact, look at is as a performance
upgrade! You have increase oil capacity over stock, plus got extra oil
at no extra charge! ;D
