I'm told the F150 had a major frame redesign in the last year or two.
Apparently something was beefed up.

There was a big ring F-150 thieves in Arizona last year. One of the girls I
worked with, and many others lost theirs in one or two days! There must be
*something* about those things for such a massive amount of thefts in so
short a period.

Escalades are the most stolen vehicle in the US (adjusted
for number on the road) - so much for the idea that thieves
are inteligent (see
http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/car_theft/ ).

If he is happy with a Honda, why the heck was he driving a
pick-up? As for the paint, I had to laugh. The paint is
literally falling off my sister's Honda Civic - but she is
still happy (the car runs, so she is happy).

They completely redesigned the truck. The new frame is
stiffer (and completely different), but that doesn't mean
anything was wrong with the old frame. In fact, I have a
much older F150 ('92) and am very happy with it.

Good truck (Oh, My God....20 years ago I would have NEVER said a Ford was
good!) Which engine/tranny combo do you have?

Good truck (Oh, My God....20 years ago I would have NEVER said a Ford was
good!) Which engine/tranny combo do you have?

My 1992 F150 has the 300 cid inline 6 with an early E4OD
Transmisssion (it was a no cost upgrade to the AOD in 1992
if you got the 6). I did have to replace the strater and
alternator and the A/C was updated to R134. I used to drive
the truck a lot. These days it is used about once a week and
makes mostly short trip with heavy loads in muddy fields.
This has been hard on the muffler and exhaust pipe -
probably the mud caked on top isn't helping the life of the
pipe. Only real problem is that it is a 2WD w/o LS and with
the particular tires installed (Michelin LTX), it will get
stuck on wet grass if you aren't loaded with something in
the back. I really wanted to upgrade to a newer 4WD truck,
but the prices are just too high to make it a reasonable
thing to do. The truck is used on my farm, and a new Tundra
would eat my entire profit for last year. The way things are
going, I either need to farm a lot more land, or just rent
out what I own. At least for another three years, I am just
going to sit tight and assume the old F150 will keep
cruising along. I can borrow my Father Ranger (4WD) when the
mud gets too deep. BTW, except for the cramped cab, the
Ranger is great. It is now 5 years old with 60,000 miles and
the only repair was the replacement of the IAC (and it
wasn't broken, but it was noisy). I just don't like the
Ranger becasue the cab is too small, and Ford doesn't sell
the true Ranger Crew Cab (4 real doors) in the US (although
it is available in other markets, like Mexico). If a crew
cab Ranger was available, then I'd consider it. Even though
it is a little smaller than the Colorado, the Ranger is a
far better made truck. I'd rate the interior and build
quality of my Father's Ranger as being at least as good as
the Tundras I test drove. The one thing that was much better
on the Tundra than any of the other trucks was the nice
clean engine compartment. I though the I-6 in my old F150
was easy to see, but the Tundra, even with a V-8 was easier.

Rangers are nice, esp the 5-speeds. Ranger '4-door' (not a true 4 door,
but the 'wing' doors) have been available since 1999 or 2000. I've sold
about 5 of them. And there is enough room in the Ext. cab (I'm a pretty
big guy!)

Much, much better than an S-10, fer sure!

And,I believe there was a 3 door since 1998?

I don't thibnk there was ever a three door, but I am not
sure. My Father has owned 5 Rangers - '83, '86. '89, '92,
'99. Except for the '83, they have all been fine. The '83
was an "S" model. This had a 4 cylinder with an automatic,
no power steering, no power brakes, no A/C, not even a
radio. He sold the '83 becasue he wanted A/C. He sold the
'86 to me after it was involved in a couple of collisions (I
repaired it). In '92 he decided he wanted an extended cab.
The '92 was an extended cab without rear doors. In '99 he
decided he wanted 4WD. The '99 is an extended cab with the
rear suicide doors. I am 6'2 and "large" and I find the cab
cramped for anything other than moderate lenght trips. My
Father is not paricularly hard on a vehicle, but he neither
is he particulalry good at having routine maintenance
performed. Of the five Rangers, the only significant repair,
was a leaky water pump on the '92 (3.0L V-6). I bough the
'86 from him in '89 and drove it for a few years until it
had an unfortunate accident. Only mechanical problem it ever
had was a failed ignition module. Of the 5 Rangers, I doubt
we have collectively spent $400 on repairs over 22 years and
350,000 miles of use. I just wish the Rangers were a little
bigger - Dakota size would be OK.

All my 'toys' are 'classic' Toyotas (he he). One of my favourites is a
1983 4WD Tercel Wagon, painted Bright (and I mean BRIGHT! I mixed the
paint myself!) yellow with black trim and striping. It's an "S"-box, but a
blast to drive!

I know there are people in here who knock the Fords, but I think they are
about the best made American cars and trucks. My boss is a Ford man, and
we sell a lot of them. They seem to run well and be fairly trouble-free. I
have even take cars we have sold back in trade 2-4 years later, still
running quite well. Um, scratch that for the 3.8 litre engine,
however...avoid like the Plague! Otherwise, OK. Also, as a driver for a
parts store, we had Ford Rangers for delivery trucks. We had a '92 with
182,000 with broken springs (they kept loading the thing with 2 55 gal
drums of oil...) and another '92 with a 5 speed and 108,000; both ran
great, and were POUNDED on all their lives!
