Tall valve covers are generally for engines that have very high lift cams,
1.6:1 rocker arms etc. Or just for looks if you desire.

When you're looking for valve covers take a look inside your old ones.

See where the oil has been squirting up onto the top surface of the
cover? Valve covers are partially responsible for redirecting the oil
shooting out of the pushrods back onto the rocker arms, keeping the
balls and valve stem tip lubricated. Tall covers are quite a bit taller
than stock and may not work as well for redirecting the oil. If you have
a high volume/pressure oil pump the oil coming out of the pushrods will
squirt 6 feet with the covers off!...lol

Smokey Yunick told me so.
