Xi LSD? |
|
|
Does anyone know with any certainty whether or not E46 Xi vehicles are
equipped with a rear LSD?
After a number of autocross events in my '00 328Ci, I'm thinking that
it really needs an LSD to put the power down properly. The DSC is too
invasive and the idea of applying the brakes (selectivly via the ASC)
strikes me as counter to the idea of going faster.
I know I could replace just about everything aft of the driveshaft
with M3 parts or buy a complete LSD from Koala Motorsports, but both
of those routes are over $3000. Yikes!
Thus my question about E46 Xi equipment. I found a note in the BMW
TIS talking about how earlier (late '80s) Xis did have an LSD so I'm
think that might be a lower cost route to explore.
thanks,
Mark

No. The only current BMWs with LSDs that I know of are the M3 (& M5?)

BMW no longer believes that LSD is necessary.
No BMW design, from the E38 (1995) has had LSD with the exception of the E39
M5 and E46 M3. It remains to be seen if the E60 M5 will have it. Most
designs, prior to E38, did not have LSD if they had ASC or ASC+T
The E30 iX had LSD standard, the Xi's do not have it. BMW believes that DSC
does the same job. Your autocross experience shows just how wrong they are.

they were not Xis, but rather ixs: E30 325ix/ixT (late 80's) and E34
525ix/ixT (-92-96). the AWD system was completely different from the
iDrive and Xi systems used today; instead of DSC/ASC/selective braking
there were two viscous couplings (rear+center diff), and in the 525ix
center diff was 'computer controlled' (whatever that means).
basically you're asking whether an ix E30 rear diff would fit in a
E46, and the answer is very likely 'no' :/

Thanks to all who responded. I suspected as much, but with BMW
technical info as hard to find as it is, I was hoping there was
another way.
