I forgot my main question :

What are the best mods that can basically be made to an early 944 in terms
of power ?

Not much...in 1983, when the 944 was introduced, the factory tweaked 150HP
out of it. In today's standards 150HP is not much, but back in early 80's
the Corvette was producing 188HP and the Camaro and Firebird were producing
150HP, so the 944, with an engine half the size of it's primary racing
competition, managed to be in the same horsepower neighborhood. That being
said, the 944 N/A can be modified with engine and breathing improvements
that may get it up to 180HP. Supercharging one will get it up to near 200HP.
If you want breakneck speed, move on to a 944T and modify from there. You
can go into the 400HP range there.
Remember one thing...because of gearing, you still will not have a very good
quarter miler...but once spooled up...

You can put in a different chip and replace the exhaust system. This
still won't get you far. The stock answer for this is "Sell it and get a
turbo." The engine is highly tuned as it is.
