Well if it doesn't fall apart in 6 months the new Ford 500 looks like a
winner. But for Ford that is a big "if". They had one sitting at the mall
all optioned up. Very reasonable price, gorgeous inside and good mileage
figures. Like I said, if it holds up they did one nice job. Of course I
haven't had the opportunity to drive one yet. Maybe they left out the
engine.

I saw a guy drive up in a white one today. Looked remarkably like that
small Lincoln they've got. Good looking car, for sure.

When I see the appellation "500", I keep thinking of my Dad's
1970 Custom 500, which was a very different beast.

The 500 is already being "sent back" for a new engine. It seems that
the public isn't willing to put up with its lack of power, and
extreme noise level.

Hey, Art, haven't really seen one yet? Big, but not like the Crown Vic,
Bigger than a Taurus, sorta ugly, and a cheap interior. For should have
put a little more into it before releasing it. Also, check the price.

It's got the 24 valve Duratec V-6. No good at the drag strip but plenty good
for this application.

Probably good they are attending to that the first year. They could put
off a motor replacement for years as BMW and Audi did with the anemic
1.8 liter engines in the original Z3 and TT's

I have. It runs like a dream. The CVT is a hoot. You floor the
throttle and the RPM's jump to near 6K and stay there till the
car get up to speed then drops to 1600 at 65 MPH when you let up
on the throttle. The megadealerships company I once worked for
takes cars to Pocono raceway for evaluation by the different
sales teams. The 500 SES I drove had quicker times than the
Chrysler 300 Touring, even though the 300 had a 3.5 with 35 more
HP than the 500's 2.0. The 300 can be had with
a 345 HP V8, however. Although it costs less than a Camry, the
500 competes with the Avalon as a large car. The Avalon they had
there was over $7,000 more than the 500 and $5,000 more than the
300, both of which were AWD

According to "Automotive News," sales of the 500 are exceeding
Ford expectations as are the sales of the new
Mustang. Dealers are getting over MSRP in some markets
for Mustangs. One dealer says "My customers are coming in for
service, upon seeing the Mustang they are going home with new
cars, its 1964 all over again it seems"

The price surprised me as well. For an AWD car that is bigger
than the Avalon with which it competes, to sell for so many
thousands less than a smaller FWD similarly equipped V6 Camry is
amazing.

Let's see, Art. All optioned up? From what I've read, that brings it up to
$32,000. A Camry all optioned up costs about $27,000 or less (if you tell
the dealer you'll help him make 'quota') and, um, WON'T fall apart. Oh,
yeah...the Ford is underpowered for its size, too.

Wow, here is the text:

Ford Five Hundred -- When the best you can say about a car is that it's
got a really big trunk and it's not very expensive, that's a problem.
Meet the new Ford Five Hundred. The exterior is a blah knockoff of a VW
Passat, the cabin nondescript. Plus, the designers of this Taurus
replacement forgot to replace the engine: Its old 203-horse V-6 is weak
and noisy. Ford already plans to "readjust" production.

205 hp with the 6 speed or CVT should be enuf when you get 21/29 mpg in a
full size car at $2+ per gallon gas. It is not a race car. I've done a
bunch of searches and I haven't found any engine noise complaints except for
the first prototype test drive.
