How does the Matrix compare to the Subaru Outback??

The Outback handles much better, is available with a very powerful
drivetrain, has a very sophisticated all-wheel drive system - especially
with automatic transmission. It also costs a bunch more than the Matrix
so you're really not comparing Apples and Apples. A well optioned Focus
easily out handles the Matrix, is more fun to drive, has more and better
options at a better price. Whoops, sorry, it's not a Toyota. Neither's
the Outback so I guess it's Matrix for you!

While you're at the Toyota dealer, wander over to the Scion end of the
showroom. If you're over 30, ignore the silly hip-hop marketing stuff they
have, but do take a look at the xA and xB. Depending upon what your needs
are, you might find these to be to your liking. My wife and I looked at
CRV, RAV4 and Matrix, but ended up with an xB because of the big interior
(be sure to sit in the _back_ seat!) and far better mileage.
OTOH, if you're looking for a performance car you might want to head for the
Subaru dealer. Yes, there is a performance version of the Matrix, but you
have to wind the engine tight before it makes any power.
