Anyone know offhand whether the 4 cylinder engine in the 2001 Frontier
used a timing belt or a chain? If belt, when is the recommended
replacement?

Thanks,
-Scott

It's supposed to last the life of the engine. Occasionally timing chains do
need to be replaced but usually not until a LOT of miles and you will
probably get some audible warnings such as rattle and pinging when it's out
of specs.

Thanks for the response. Actually I had a timing chain stretch out on
a Celica so that it wore a hole through the water jacket over the
timing chain cover. The first sign that the timing chain had
stretched was overheating and water in the oil pan.

Thanks again,
-Scott
