Dan,
You got it ....column shift. I got it so I could put the kids in back and
ALL of my in-laws in the trunk...lol. I think I remember a screw with a
long, spring loaded "shaft" under the column. Either that or I was upside
down for too long.
I'll take a look at that and see what I can do.
Thanks....oh and sorry about the spam your about to get :-(

Re: 1966 Executive...more questions |

Life isn't always easy. Went to my book shelve and hauled out my
Chiltons 1964
to 1974. Ah-ha Scotts 66 should be in here. 1964 no adjustment, 1967
1968 the
neutral lockout switch is at the end of the column and the same for 1969
to 1970.
Hey, what happened to 65 66 71, 2, 3, and 4? I know that Pontiac made
cars in
1966 cause you have one and I owned a
66 Goat.
You said that you hot wired (now theres a term I haven't used in a
while) the starter and the car ran...So it can't be a resister or
ballast..I wish I was your neighbor cause getting this thing running is
only a 12 Pack job. I have never, never
had a car I couldn't get started with a 12
pack of beer.

Re: 1966 Executive...more questions |

Maybe that's my problem. I need a 12 pack. I did manage to verify the coil
is getting 12V (or thereabouts) with the key in start. I also found,
checked, swapped with another...the neutral switch. That doesn't mean that
I've ruled it out yet. Any ideas to bypass it? I have my suspicions on
how...but not ready to grab the shunts yet.
At this point, the ignition switch, ballast wire (no resistor, at least in
mine), starter and selonoid seem to all be fine. It about has to be the
neutral switch or a bad wire in the harness. The reason I say that is that
it appears that someone put in a new wiring harness probably about 4 years
ago (I know the lady who had it before me put over $10,000 in it before
putting it in her garage...go figure).
I'm going to order (if the library fails me) the wiring harness diagrams
from ebay as soon as I see them come up again.
Thanks everyone for all the help...boy do I owe some 12 packs :)

Scott,
By chance your car isn't one that the seat belts have to be connected
before the vehicle will start? Wouldn't that be
a laugh......

Dan,
I'll say I don't think so.....however, not being one to cast stones at any
idea at this point....I'll definately take a look in the morning....and
promptly jump off the roof if it works ;-).
Thanks for the idea.

Re: 1966 Executive...more questions |

Dan,
Thanks for the tip....I was able to confirm 100%....I don't have the
seatbelts. I remember learning lots of new words from my Grandpa's 72 or 74
Buick that had that "feature". He used to hook the belt and tuck it as deep
as he could in the seat....needless to say back in the days before it was
illegal to go without.
I'm thinking the wire between the starter and the key is the source of the
problem now. Either that or possibly still the neutral safety switch. I
did have to replace the switch that was in there. When I took it off, it
pretty much disintegrated. I put in the one from my old Catalina. It
worked when it was still in the car (that sat for almost 15 years...so I'm
not saying for sure it's ok either). When I inspected the inside...it looks
pretty sure that if I just short two of the wires together, I should be able
to bypass it and confirm it is or isn't the problem.
I'll give these two a shot tomorrow or Monday at the latest. I just got a
new set of rims Friday and will get the tires for them this week.
Hopefully, by then, I'll have her running and ready to go.
Thanks again for all the help...I'll keep posting all the fun.

Re: 1966 Executive FIXED!!!!!!! |
|

Alright...first I'd like to thank everyone with all they're tips and
suggestions. I finally "got 'er done". It turns out the wire going to the
starter selenoid was freyed right at the goose neck (near the top side of
the engine). I'm not sure what caused it, but looks almost like someone was
pulling on the wiring harness and maybe crushed it (then uncrushed without
fixing it), when they rebuilt the engine. I got my big back end under the
car and replaced that section. Turned the key and she cranked right up!
On the plus side, now I know where everything is under the hood (wiring
anyway) and quite a bit under the dash. I'm an electrical engineer and as
part of my toying around, I have some ideas I'm working on to make this a
custom with a new wiring harness (of my own design). I'm going to get all
of this up on my website eventually and post the link here. Hopefully,
someone else will learn from my experiences...good and bad...lol
Thanks again for all the help. I'll be back for more soon I'm sure!
