I recently gleaned info from this forum regarding blower motor problems on my 97 escort and would like to share what I have learned. I have found that when it is 40 below the cheap non OEM motors lock up(poor bearings) and in turn burn out the blower motor resistor and possibly the fan speed switch. I have replaced two of these motors in less than a month(250 bucks, the OEM parts about 140) and will have to again replace the resistor as the thermal protector has burned up. I am slowly learning not to be cheap and to use only genuine Ford parts. A lot of companys are now having their product manufactured in China. I think "quality control" is gone. My recommendation is always buy the OEM parts first.save yourself a lot of frustration, time and money.
