What could be wrong with my car (brake related?) |

I'm having an issue with my 2004 Dodge Intrepid. Anytime I start out driving and use the brakes there is a grinding/squeaking sound coming from the rear passenger side. After I've been driving for a few minutes it usually no longer makes that sound when I brake.
Now, I just got new brake pads a year ago and I'm pretty easy on my brakes, so I really don't think it's the pads. It is getting worse and it has gotten to the point where now once in a while it will be squeaking as I'm driving, and not braking at all.
Could it be that the pads are not making contact properly, and that after a few minutes of driving/breaking they go into place? I'm not good with cars so I'm afraid that a mechanic will try to take advantage of me on this (I don't trust mechanics due to past experiences!)
Please let me know what you think.
