| 've been chasing this same problem on a 2000 grand marquis 4.6L engine. The engine only misses under load conditions. When changing the plugs I came across one plug well with oil in it. I was stumped by how the oil got there and figured I'd spilled it somehow but it was dirty oil. (maybe the sparking cooks the oil somehow). Anyway, I surmised this was the source of the miss so I cleaned it up and figured I'd solved the problem. This cured it about 90%. The car ran much better but still had some missing. After several days I had a second look at the same cylinder and there was oil on the spark plug boot again! Good golly miss molly where is this oil coming from? could there be a micro crack in the aluminum cylinder head? The plug was tight and the threads good. It must be a crack because the car ran fine for 9 years. Somehow oil is seeping into the spark plug well. the offending cylinder is #7 (driver's side, 3rd one back from the front of the engine). What cylinder did you have a problem with? There could be some issue with the tolerances in this area of the head. Do you know if there are any service bulletins concerning this problem? I contemplated some type of epoxy crack repair but I can't even see the crack. Could you provide any details on your fix? What type of pipe did you use that you could still get the plug socket into the well? Thanks |
