What to buy if you drive very little? |

I live in a small town where everything is walkable, including my workplace. Because of this, I haven't owned a car in five years--because my last car just sat in my driveway. However, I'm thinking of buying a used car again and would like to solicit advice on a couple of questions:
First, I'm only going to drive about 5,000-6,000 miles a year (based on when I last owned a car), probably only two trips a week on average. Some people tell me that it's not good to leave a car sitting for too long, but if I own one it WILL sit for days on end. Are there some cars that are better for this than others (particularly for Vermont winters)?
Second, would I maintain a lightly driven car differently from one driven every day? Obviously, the AMOUNT of maintainance will be less, but I'd like to know if I need to take any special precautions.
Thanks for any advice on these questions.
