My local oil and lube shop recommended that I should have my tie rods and/or ends replaced on my vehicle. Since the quote was several hundred dollars, I thought I'd like to see what I could find out about checking it on my own. Is there a way I can verify that the tie rods need to replaced?

Go to the library, and get the shop manual for your vehicle. It will show you the proper way to check your ball joints and tie rod ends.

Easier yet. Didn't say what kind of car but, their all basically the same. Either in front or behine the wheel, you'll see (rods) called tie rods coming to the spindle assembley. If you grab the tie rod, you should be able to twist it alittle but, you should get no movement as far a up and down, forward or aft or side to side. Is so, you tie rod ends are worn. All vehicles have replaceable tie rod ends. Spindle assemble end never wear unless the tie rod end holding nut comes loose. (Highly unlikley) After the tie rod ends are replaced, the alignment in necessary to make sure it track right. Remember, the vehicle must be on the ground to check the rod end properly. Don't know what you mean by several hundred dollars but, it doesn't hurt to get a second opinion.
