Cheap ass is probably using 87 and now letting it ping. He saves some gas
and I hope it's enough savings to replace the engine when he breaks the
ring lands on the pistons..

The knock sensor should not be modified, if you want to keep the engine
in good condition. There may be damage if there is too much engine
pinging.

To save fuel, have a light foot on the gas pedel, time your driving
between the lights to not need to use the breaks as often. When
breaking, you are using up energy that took fuel to make. When driving
through areas with a lot of stop signs, drive a little slower, and
allow more stopping time. Do not accellerate too hard when starting
off.

From the mechanical points, make sure that the tire pressure is in
specs, make sure that the air cleaner is clean, and the gas filter is
changed at least once a year. Change the spark plugs when they are due,
and use synthetic motor oil. Change the oil filter each time the oil is
changed.

When driving on the highway, the greater the speed, the more effect of
the wind resistance. After about 50 to 60 mph, depending on the design
of the car, the air resistance starts to build up very rapidly in
comparison to the speed increase. Depending on the aerodynamics,
keeping the car below 60 mph, will help to increase the fuel
consumption.

I found that using high test fuel, actualy saved some cost. The fuel
economy increased enough percentage points, to make up for the added
cost, and allowed for a little more savings.

Keeping the car well maintained, and driving it on the gentle side will
increase the fuel economy. With the proper maintanence, and good
driving habits, you can increase the fuel economy more than 10 to 15%
compared to not doing the general maintance often, and driving with a
moderately heavy foot on the gas pedel.
