I have had trouble with my 2000 Maxima for two years with rough idle at
start up every morning. It runs rough, may cut off. When I get it
running it runs fine all day even though it may set up a number of
hours. Does it every morning.

I took it to Nissan in 2003 and they put new software in computer and
replace a heat sensor in the rear of the car but that did not do any
good. I have replaced the started after it went by and also replaced
the fuel filter. None of that helped any. Their computers did not see
anything else wrong with the car.

I went by the Nissan dealer and they said it could be the wax kit and
to bring it by.

Would that fix this problem?

Is that hard to replace. How can you tell if it is bad?

Thanks for any help.

Okay, here's a wax kit: http://www.girl.com.au/perfect_wax_kit.htm

Oh, automotive related? http://www.kitwax.com/ or
http://www.autogeek.net/pinexkit.html.

Joke >>

Mechanic: (poking around under the hood) Here's your problem - you're gonna
need a new gasket.

Customer: Are you sure it needs a gas kit? It's been running fine on diesel
up 'til now!

What they might mean is the thermowax unit that expands and props the
throttle open as the car cools... I don't know if the 2000 Max would have
one, but my '99 Altima does. I always have thought it was a step backwards
from my '94, which managed fine without such a funny part.

It would explain your problem if yours is not expanding enough/at all, or is
out of adjustment, causing the throttle to not open enough at idle when the
car is cold... so maybe they are on to something!

Hope that helps.

JM

Is there a way to look at it and tell whether it is working or not?

Well, if you look at the throttle angle at idle when the car is cold, and
compare that to when it's warm, there should be some difference. Again,
this is assuming your car has such a thing. If you look at what the
throttle mechanism rests on, in my case there is a cam under the throttle
linkage which is actuated by the wax cylinder and opens the throttle when
cold.

You might also be able to tell be comparing the tension on the throttle
cable when the car is cold to the same when warm. Theoretically if the cam
is holding the throttle open, there will be a bit of extra slack in the
cable.
