Most Onstar equipped vehicles are at risk of loosing service when analog
cell phone shuts down. This will start happening in the US in January
2008.

Real navigation systems with an in-car LCD display do not use the cell
phone connection and will not be effected.

John, I don't believe that is the case. It is my understanding that as with
many cell phones, OnStar uses both analog & digital signals. Actually, while
typing this comment, I visited the OnStar site and have confirmed that
OnStar now uses Analog/Digital (Dual Mode). Here's the scoop, under the
heading "OnStar Equipment" :

http://www.onstar.com/us_english/jsp/explore/onstar_basics/technology.jsp

As far as I can tell, GM didn't start putting in dual mode capable sets
until 2003 or 2004, it is hard to find a straight answer. I am told
that for our 2002 Olds I am SOL. Somehow buying a feature in 2002
which will become useless only six years later seems highly
unsatisfactory to me, and GM certainly didn't warn me when I bought my
car that the Onstar feature would stop working in six years.

Once again, GM sticks it to it's customers IMO.

This one you can blame more on the cellular companies....they are the
ones that are getting rid of analog cell coverage.

Analog was clearly on the way out in 2002 when GM built and sold me my
vehicle.

Then the question begs to be asked, if you knew that analog was "clearly" on
the way out when you bought your car with OnStar, why are you blaming GM?
John, when you point your index finger at GM, remember, there are usually 3
fingers pointing right back at you. John, you're flip-flopping worse than a
politician here! Just like your "its history after 2008." comment. John,
you've lost your argument on its two principle issues. Give it up and admit
defeat! *lol*

Uhh, if you clearly knew it was on the way out, then why did you get that
feature on your car? In fact, everything you say is complete crap so get out
of your mom's basement and go play with your friends.
Oh, and by the way, that computer you are using? Yup, it was outdated the
day after you bought it. Bet you knew that too though, right? Go TROLL
elsewhere.

I would be surprised of the system wasn't flash upgradeable or "e-prom/chip"
upgradeable. Think about it. If the system in the car is no longer useful,
GM looses the revenue stream from the service. That won't happen, I'm sure.

Surely the older onstar modules are either upgradeable or pug-and-play
replaceable.

Last I read, the subscription rate was fairly high. For those that like the

True, I am "guilty" on not researching the technology behind Onstar when
I bought my car. GM is likewise guilty of hiding the facts which as a
big company in the know about what they are doing clearly could have and
should have done better by it's customers.

But in the end GM will continue to be the looser. Onstar is going to
loose a bunch of subscribers when much of the exisiting fleet of Onstar
equipped vehicles stop working. People will stop sending their money to
GM every month.

Well, GM says that there is no upgrade for most pre-2004 model year
vehicles. Many of the post 2004 vehicle require a hardware upgrade
which will only be available to those who sign a new 3 year contract.

You're grasping at straws. What 'facts' was GM hiding? Are you going to
throw your old analogue cell phone at Motorola and yell because the cell
company "hid the facts" from you? No, because you moved on, have a dual mode
phone like 85% of cell customers today. Come 2008, the people using the old
analogue StarTACs and MicroTACs will have to ditch their phones and go
digital. Make sure you go pick up an old analogue phone and a foil hat so
you can lead the wave of class action lawsuits.

The ruling took place in November 2002 (according to the OnStar website),
and it was most likely just before GM vehicles got the dual mode upgrade.
What model year was your vehicle? When did you buy it? Maybe you aren't to
blame for getting a vehicle not capable of digital.

The analogy is not a good one. I can get a new cell phone once per year
for free simply by changing suppliers and getting a new contract.

If GM were smart, they would offer to swap out whatever needs to be
swapped out in my vehicle to keep Onstar working, but so far they have
simply said there will be no upgrade possible. So, if I want to keep
Onstar GM's official position is that I need to buy a new vehicle.
Hardly the same situation as a cell phone.

Huh, that's funny. You said it, let me quote:
"I can get a new cell phone once per year..."
"...GM's official position is that I need to buy a new vehicle..."

Hardly the same at all.
