This is a follow-up to my previous post. It was warm Saturday and I
managed to locate a filter kit so I decided to change the fluid and
filter myself. This was a big mistake. Changing the fluid would not be
a problem since there is a drain plug but to anyone considering
changing the filter - DON'T do it it's a trick. Let me clarify that
this is the 4-sp auto tranny paired with the 1.6L engine. You see,
Nissan decided to make an otherwise simple job into a nightmare. One of
the bolts that holds the filter threads through a washer into a nut on
the top of the valve body. When you remove the bolt, the washer and nut
get lost in there. The only way to tighten this back is to remove the
valve body - not fun, especially since the gasket broke. I will
probably have to buy an entire kit to get that gasket but I don't know
yet. Please note that this gasket also seals the halves of the valve
body so it has to be disassembled. I'm picturing little silver balls
and springs flying everywhere. I'll probably get it back together OK
since I'm a former copier tech (ever see what's in those?) but I
already know it won't be fun. There is also a large spring that jumped
out at me that I haven't figured out how to get back yet. If I get
around to it and the spring doesn't seriously injure me I'll let you
know how it goes.

Actually this "screen" should never need to be changed. It's not a paper
"filter" like old american automatics had. Unless you haven't changed the
fluid like you should (or the trans is about to come apart!), a drain and
fill should be fine, otherwise just remove the pan and clean out the gunk.
You're right, I've seen them with this dumb nut and bolt setup before when
rebuilding them!

But when you see the dumb nut and bolt maybe something in the back of
your mind should say "MAYBE I SHOULD NOT GO THERE?" Maybe they are
scaring me NOT to go there, MAYBE I should ask someone who KNOWS??
But on the other hand, some of the best lessons learned are the really
expensive ones. ;-)

Kinda hard not to "go there" when you're overhauling the tranny....
