What ever happened to CVT transmissions?

Ford has both CVT and six speed tranny in several 2005 and 2006 models as
standard equipment.

I read about this joint venture two years ago and have often wondered if the
project ever got off the ground.

It sounds promising if they can ever get their acts together and pull this
off successfully.
