What to do if your brake fails while driving |
|
|
Excuse a newbie, but if the brakes fail on a car that you were driving,
is it safe to:
1. Use the handbrake (even if lightly)
2. Put the car is reverse till it slows down and move to N?
What else could one do?

You should be able to safely stop using the hand or 'emergency' brake.
It is a little harder with a foot emergency brake, but the same holds,
keep the button pushed with you thumb and pump them.
You have to pump them carefully because they only grab the rear wheels.
If you lock it on, you will do 360's faster than you can blink.
It would be a good thing to practice in an empty parking lot, just so
you know how it works.
You also can manually gear down the transmission to slow you down. Go
to 2nd, then to 1st. Using reverse isn't a good idea, that can stall
the engine, then your steering is difficult and you lose any engine
braking.

Open driver door and place left foot on the ground, increasing pressure
gradually. Aim for nearest electric pole.
