IMPEACH BUSH:

Phosphorus 'may have killed' in Iraq

US IraqThe US military on Wednesday acknowledged it might have killed
civilians in the Iraqi city of Falluja with white phosphorus munitions
during the battle against insurgents a year ago.

The Pentagon insisted civilians had not been targeted, however, and
that it had avoided unnecessary casualties by evacuating the city
before the offensive.

White phosphorus, which is fired by artillery or mortars, can be used
as an incendiary device or to create a smokescreen.

While it is not classified as a chemical weapon, the chemical is
covered by Protocol III of the 1980 Convention on Conventional Weapons,
which prohibits the use of incendiary weapons against military forces
located within concentrations of civilians - as was the case with the
insurgents in Falluja. The US is party to the convention but, unlike a
number of its allies, including the UK, it has not signed Protocol III.

Last week, Italy's Rai 24 news channel broadcast a documentary that
alleged many civilians had been burned to death by the incendiary
devices during the assault. It showed bodies burned to the bone inside
clothes that remained intact.

Narmin Uthman, Iraq's acting human rights minister, said an Iraqi
team would investigate the claims.

"The documentary offers no compelling evidence as to how the people
in the various images actually died," Lieutenant-Colonel Barry
Venable, a Pentagon spokesman, told the FT. He said he was not aware of
any US inquiry into the issue.

Asked if it was possible civilians had been killed by white phosphorus,
he replied: "It would not be out of the realm of the possible."

The UK defence ministry said the British army only used white
phosphorus for smokescreens.

Look at the way this is written. Who the hell published this? Where
is the link?

They were told to get out. It's their problem if they want to harbor
the mercenaries.

This is your smoking gun? Of course he's got to cover his ass somehow.
What if he denied it and they found out a soldier lit a match to smoke
and some of the phosphorus from the match burned someone?

Fallujah should have been burned with someting more incindiary than
white phosphorus.

Children dying this way bothers me.
But I blame the adults. They were given the opportunity to evacuate but
they did not. 200,000 did safely leave. If it were me I certainly would
have. Would'nt any of us for the sake of your child? Any of the adults who
stayed must have been hardcore insurgents or their family members.
Next they cut off their water, electricity, food supplies. Still they
stayed. Is it possible they were not allowed to go?
Our military could not know these people were still there.
Next came 8 weeks of bombings.
Before any of this they tried talks. The insurgents would have none of it.
Lastly the gloves were pulled off and Phosphorous was used to flush
insurgents into the open and taken out with High Energy explosions.
By law phosphorous may be used as an insindiary device against the enemy
but not intentionally on civilians. Clearly here it was not.
Tragic.

Why do you guys even bother to reply to the loonies? As usual little
richard tells only half the story. Phosphorus has been used for more than
60 years by the military in one form to light the night sky or in another to
produce cover smoke. Next thing you know the kooks on the left will say the
military is in violation of the pollution laws by using its bombs. LOL

You are partly correct. I was willing to fight ANY of the people like that
who wanted to kill us in 1944 and I would do so today, if I was allowed, but
why would you think I would fight a person simply because he looks like me?
