Wait for AMD's Orleans chip |
|
|
Earlier this month I was in the process of researching componet
parts for a new computer system to replace my old one.
Old system:
Abit Motherboard 266 bus
Amd Athlon XP 1700
1024Gb DDR Ram
19 in LCD
Ect....
The research componets for new system:
Amd Athlon 64 3500 (venice)
512Mb DDR2
Asus A8N5X Motherboart w/ PCI Express x16 x4 x1
nVidia nForce 4 chipset, SATA II , LAN, Audio.....
Hitachi 160Gb HD w/ 8Mb buffer
ATX 12V 400-450watt case
Ect.....
It would've been a quatum leap in performace.
But now I leared on some wed sites that a new AMD processor with
a new pin configuration M2 will come out in 2006.
This new chip will have a DDR2 memory controller built in.
I think I'll wait for the next AMD (Orleans) chips.
Besides, my old Abit/ Athlon 1700+ sill going strong.

If you do the research, you will learn there will be very little improvement
with DDR2 on the AMD64 platform. AMD's direct Connect Architecture, On-die
memory controller, and Hypertransport bus are already using the RAM-CPU at
max,and are already duplex. DDR2 only give a tiny fractional increase in
performance. DDR2 does benefit Intel's kludge processors because they are
still hopelessly tied to a Northbridge chip and hyperthreading. The buying
public is thinking DDR2 is a better, are asking, so the manufacturers are
including on the AMD64 platform. In addition, memory manufacturers are
wanting to transition to the costlier and more profitable DDR2.
If you are truly hardcore and are willing to spend 3-4 times as much for the
RAM to only gain less than a 5% increase in performance, then go ahead.
