I have had my 94 Pathfinder die for no apparent reason 5 times in the last
month. The first time was after about 10 min of driving. It felt like it had
run out of fuel, and would not restart. I checked the fuel pump fuse, the
ECU fuse, and the immobiliser. everything seemed fine. The car restarted and
ran fine, so I assumed it was just a bad contact on the fuse. The car ran
fine for another 2 weeks then did the same thing again. Did the same thing
with the fuses, and it started again and off I went. The next time about
three days later, it started after around 3 min without touching the fuses.
Today it went dead again but started after turning the ignition on and off a
few times before coming to a stop, then died about 30 seconds later. This
time would not restart. I checked for power at the fuse, tested ok. I was
not sure which relay was the fuel pump one, so I couldn't check that. I
removed the fuel hose from the filter to the regulator and although it was
not under much pressure, fuel flowed out of the regulator side of the hose
like it was gravity fed.
I refitted the hose and the car started and ran fine again.
I suspect the pump, or the relay, but I can't be certain as I can't hear if
the pump is working when I turn on the ignition after it ahas stopped as I
am always by myself when this happens.
Anyone have any ideas, as a fuel pump is to expensive to just put in with
the hope that alone will fix it.
Thanks
Regards
Baz

I checked it out with a multimeter the fifth time it happened and there was
actually power coming from the immobiliser module, so that threw me a bit.
After I pulled the dash half apart and the fuel pump inspection plate off
etc, etc, and found nothing, I was about to give up and put everything back
together when it cut out and wouldn't restart. I checked that the fuel pump
was definitely not working and started looking for the reason. If I put
power straight to the pump side of the relay, the pump worked. Process of
elimination found that it was the immobiliser module not passing enough
current to pull in the relay. I never would have found it if the problem
stayed intermittent
