It sounds like the bracket you're referring to could be the upper
engine mount -- sometimes called a "dog-bone". It is connected between
the engine block and the frame of the car just above (more or less) the
radiator.
If that's the case, it is OK to disconnect it -- or remove one end so
that it will swing out of the way. Just don't start the engine/drive
the car with it disconnected.
