How much fluid should a complete flush use?

I took my car in & they used "4 quarts" -- but it was supposed to be a power
flush -- and I thought it would use at least 6...

A drain and refill uses 3 litres. A complete flush uses 6 as there are 3
in the torque convertor.

Thank you. That's what I thought.... I'll write this local shop off my list for
good.

many people will advise only to do the filter and what comes out with it,
NOT a whole flush... it can scrap your tranny if it has been neglected
before, better to do more frequent smalll changes.
One big one can have serious effects on a old tranny.

I'd agree. I had a 635 with fluid of unkown vintage. I changed the fluid
and the tranny started to miss-behave. I changed it again and shortly
after the box died with A clutch pack failure. When I got an E28 with a
similar problem I left it well alone. 30k later and with fluid that must
be a lot older than that it's running fine.

exactly,,, the old fluid can actually be holding the tranny together, you
change too much fluid and you may as well get a rebuild!!!
If the tranny was serviced regularly, then it should be fine, but the chance
of regular service on a 7 series tranny is not good.
the mechanic who did just a filter and small change might actually know
better than to flush it completely.
I would have made yopu sign a waiver if I were him before touching your
tranny!!!!!
go here and search tranny flush

If it didn't use at least 12 I would be very surprised

I've been following your discussion because I have a 5 seroies with the
dreaded "lifetime" fluid. The trans is running fine right now and the
stuff is priced like gold so I am hesitatnt to do any kind of major
drain and refill on it. I just wish I could find the stuff so if I
wanted to top it up I could. But where does one find the magic elixer
of BMW lifetime fill trnasmissions?

find a reputable tranny shop, ask a few question ... what they suggest you
do, what fluid, their experience with your particular tranny... if they
don't know the answers, stay away.
then search for "kirt" on bimmer.info and he is the tranny guru, you can
call
this guy up and he will tell you everything you need to know, he will sell
you parts, replacement tranny.... he is the tranny God, most shops tell
people they need a replacement (that is all they know how to do!), Kirt
tells them the truth, supplies the knowledge and product.
Lifetime fluid is good for 100k miles at the most, if you keep going without
replacing the fluid, you may as well keep the sludge you have in it, as it
is what is holding things together!

Interesting.

Well; I do know that the car shifts MUCH better -- no more "hard" shifts,
especially into overdrive. They are all nice smooth (quick) shifts.

I'll leave well enough alone then. but it upsets me they charged me for a full
flush but marked only 4 quarts as fluid used.

Josh, maybe they can't count well and undercharged you for the service?

Cheers, Bob

but in the long run, they may have saved you a new tranny by not doing the
power flush!
You should have complained about the $$ if you only got half sevice though.

I like the optimism Bob.

This place came "recommended" -- I think because the owners son lives on the
same island I do.

Anyway - two things make me think they're idiots.

1) they said my car had no filter. <PERIOD>
2) my car required synthetic fluid.
3) they quoted me a solid firm price for a "full power flush"

well; when I picked it up, I was told "the 92 735i's had a 'split' in the year
about the transmission, and you have the older one" -- OK I can buy that; don't
belive it; but I can buy that.

I called the dealer and asked "92 735i -- what fluid does it take?" (not
synthetic was the answer)

They charged me what they quoted me for a full flush.

lesson learned. won't use them again.
