The new 3 series is too slab sided and heavy (design certainly not talking
of the KGs ), the front is OK but surely all the BMWs are now pretty ugly
(not exactly vomit ugly but certainly not pretty)

I have seen several series 1 cars (surely its the new astra after being
hit
with an ugly stick :-) so these are popular as well so when does the halo
of
the badge wear off and people realise the cars downside

I know its a "drivers" car but so was the old Nissan Primera and plain
rather than ugly whilst being quicker around the Nurburing that its then

competitors never helped sales

I'm not nuts about the design as a whole, but I quite like the back end.
The rest sucks. And it IS too heavy.

But BMW are caught between EU safety rules and the demands of buyers for
loads of extras. The days of nice light cars such as the E30 are long
gone alas. Maybe that's why the newest of my three BMWs is a 1990! It's
very hard to build a light car in this part of the market.

I hope one day they'll build a car I lust after, REALLY I do. One
problem is that there are too many folk in the UK who'd buy a Vauxhall
Vectra for 25k if it had a BMW badge!

Actually it's tough in any part of the market now, in the US and Europe/UK.
Crash standards have pretty much ruled out light cars, unless they're built of
light materials, like the Honda Insight. Case in point -- the new Mini weighs
more than Mom's '96 Saturn station wagon -- a much bigger car.

For this reason the E30 still has its appeal. Unfortunately the adolescent
ricer crowd has destroyed our fleet of E30 318is. If they haven't been driven
into the ground, they're tarted up with all kinds of tacky mods, and/or way
overpriced.

The idea of a 318ti with a supercharger is intriguing. I'll never do it
though -- it would cost as much as a cheaper used M3. And I'd probably never
even buy a 318ti to begin with, because a newer, better, "real" E36 can be had
for the same price or less. Why people pay so much for the "ti" is beyond me --
maybe it's the appeal of a lightweight car!

Finally, small, lightweight, tossable cars still do exist. My brother's Miata
is the closest thing to my old 2002 I've driven since. Comparing the specs --
overall size, weight, HP, type of suspension, etc., they're uncannily similar.

My (bone stock) E30 iX weighs 2880 pounds according to a trade scale. The
AWD components are supposed to be around 150 pounds. The Impreza RS weighs
2930 according to published info.

The iX has viscous all wheel drive, four wheel ABS, 4 wheel independant
suspension, 2.5l motor.... hmm, so does the RS.

iX has 168HP, RS 165HP.

I find it a very interesting comparison. Of course Subaru also has what BMW
never offered in iX format... much more (optional) power in the 227HP WRX
and the 300HP STI.

I know, they're not bimmers, but it's still an interesting offering,
probably the closest thing to the E30 experience I'm used to. Oh, and the
RS is $18,000 US.

So, while it's true that BMW will never build another E30, somebody else may
come close.

I lust after the old M6 more.

I have one :-)

And I ain't gonna be selling it any time soon either!! It's a completely
100% original (even down to the TRX rims and Michelin 240/45-415's) 1985 UK
delivered example in Alpine White I with dark blue leather interior. Has
65,000 miles on the clock and has had the duplex cam chain + tensioner
damper recall performed on it.

The earlier ones like mine are the best coz they have the light weight
chrome bumpers and non-electric seats which are *much* lighter than the
later "luxuried-up" ones got.

It's weapon quick and has style and class by the bucket-load!

Same here. The new M6 looks like it could have been made by Ford. It
looks like some sort of Mercury from a distance. I'm sure it is a gret
car though. I wonder how big a mortgage you'd need to buy one of those...
