I was driving to work this morning when the oil light came on. This dissappeared when i dropped below 60mph.

Unfortunately the nearest service station was 10 minutes away at this reduced speed.

After dipping the oil, i found that there was about 4mm on the bottom, hence i topped the oil up, but inadvertantly put too much in DOH ! - It's now about 1inch above max.

Continuing to work the oil light stayed on much to my bemusement ?

After another 20 minutes of careful driving the engine developed a distinct (but varying) rattling/tapping noise.

I've now left it at my works maintenance department who fear the worst, however does anyone know if too much oil can cause such a noise / why is the oil can symbol is still flashing on the dashboard ?

Various forums hint at other possible mechanical issues ?

Any advice would be welcome, as i'm currently fearing a hefty bill.

Thanks

Andy Sad
