Hi,

I've had a lot of problems with a 2000 Audi A3. I recently got it
repaired in Turners Cross Motors, Cork, Ireland. The most recent
problem was that the petrol gauge stopped working for no apparent
reason.

After three trips to the garage it was eventually repaired. Parts cost
€270 ex VAT and once labour costs were added it ended up costing me
€420 (over US$500). Apparently the labour costs were about €80 per
hour! On an eight hour day that's a gross revenue of €640 per car
mechanic. Not bad if you're on the receiving end.

One of the reasons I bought an Audi was in the misguided belief that
little would go wrong with it. Now it's just cost me €420 per visit
(plus the inconvenience of three trips to the garage as the parts were
not available on my first and second trip). Is this the going rate for
repair?

I phoned around to get prices before I got my A2 serviced recently, and
I found a lot of variation in the basic price. Although I ended up
paying more than I expected, so perhaps it all evens out in the end.

If you use an Audi dealer it will be more expensive than the more
generic back street garage though.

80 Euros?
That's cheap, a dealer in England would charge you upwards of 80-90 an hour,
that's $170 an hour for you Americans :)
