95 Pathfinder parking brake adjustment |
|
|
The parking brake won't hold my truck on the driveway anymore. I've looked
through the Service Manual but it was pretty vague as far as adjusting the
parking brake. Should it be adjusted at the rear (parking brake) drums or in
the cable?
Thanks,
DS

You will find the adjustment point along the front cable (prior to where it
splits off to both rear wheels). |

Thanks. I'll be checking this weekend. How many clicks is the "norm"? How
can I tell if the shoes are dragging?

6 to 10 clicks. Do the adjustment with the rear of the vehicle on jack
stands so that you can turn the rear wheels with the brake released.

6-10 clicks seems like a lot. All of my other cars have been between 3 and 6
clicks. I had one that only required 2.
I'll see what I can do this weekend. Thanks for your help.

You guys are scrambling up several adjustments.
There's a turnbuckle on the cable just forward of the Y. Adjust it
so that the cable is very slightly loose with the hand brake off.
No clicks on this.
Disks or drums in the back? My 95 PF had disks.
If drums: Refer to the service manual, there are two different types of
drums and the parking brake works differently. Since I think all '95
PF had four wheel disks (manual also covers PU), I'll ignore this for now.
If disks: There's a little parking drum brake. Adjust till shoe touches
drum,
then back off 7 to 8 notches. If this seems like a lot, it's because the
drum is just for the parking brake.

I do indeed have discs all around. But, of course, the parking brakes are
drums. I was planning on adjusting the turnbuckle until it is just (read
just) taught. When you say adjust until the shoes touch the drum, do you
mean adjust with the adjuster wheel inside the drum?
Thanks

You have disks in the rear? Your original wording led me to believe that
you had regular rear drums, which of course would function as the parking
brake also. Anyway, I hope you weren't misled too far.
