Dent repair cost for my X5 |
|
|
My X5 has a dent about half the size of a credit card. I went to a dealer in
the Maryland area and they wanted $1,300 to fix it including painting. Is it
cost that much to fix such a dent?????

A little pricey, but not beyond reason. The general rule is: $500 per
panel.
Unfortunately, most BMWs have clearcoats and you have to recoat
the adjacent panels, which can easily cost $250 per.
Ask your insurance agent for shop references.

Why not have your truck looked at by one of those "dent-pros". If its
as small as you say, they might be able to just *roll it out*. No
painting, preparing. I'm sure there's one in your area. Maybe call a
good independent to see who they recommend.

Otherwise, the $1,300 cost looks similar to what other dealers charge
for such relatively minor body work. That's how it is with relatively
new luxury cars. The paintjob has to be done perfectly or you can kiss
the resale value of your car goodbye.

That is the absolute truth!
I had a MB M class that was scratched while at the dealer for repairs. The
scratch was about 6 inches long and about a 1/8" to almost 1/4" wide at the
end.
While they complained about it, they eventually took my word that it
happened on their lot and while the paint job looked fine, they had
outsourced it to a Chevy dealer (owned by the same company).
Well, when I went to trade it in on a Caddy a year later, the appraiser
approached me and asked me about the 'body work'. I was stunned. I told
him what happened and he said that while the paint looked OK, it was thinner
than the rest of the paint on the fender and would have to deduct a little
from my trade value ($300). Like they were going to tell the next buyer
about it! I mean it was just paint not a dent or accident repair. B.S. to
the max.
Anyway, they have this device that can sense/scan the density of the paint
on the vehicle and can tell if the paint is up to original specs. And, it
worked because they knew exactly where the scratch had been repaired.
Well thankfully, my local BMW dealer either didn't use the same device or
didn't care because they gave me more for the car on trade.
Good paint jobs don't come cheap before or after it's done.

As already noted, your dent may be removable if it is not severe. I
think it depends on whether the dent has actually created creased edges
around the damaged area and if it has damaged the paint. It probably
also depends on how deep the dent is. Some dents can be popped back
out and smoothed over without any apparent evidence the dent ever
occurred. There are many shops under the usual names of "Dr. Dent".
"Ding Doctor", "Dent Pro" or some other combinations of such words.
Aside from the Yellow Pages, another way to locate such a shop is to
ask new car dealerships where they get their dents removed. Many new
cars arrive from shipping with minor dents. Some dealerships have no
body shops and rely on independents.
Otherwise, the $1,300 cost looks similar to what other dealers charge
for such relatively minor body work. That's how it is with relatively
new luxury cars. The paintjob has to be done perfectly or you can kiss
the resale value of your car goodbye. To get a slightly better quote
try going direct to a body shop that does work on BMWs, MBs, Porsches
and Ferraris. You can imagine how many Ferrari dealers have their own
body shop over here. They can charge a bit less than a dealer body
shop because they have more volume and a more efficient shop. Don't
use places that work mainly on Fords and Chevys - it's not that they
can't do good work - it's because they are not used to fussy customers
and the workmen will likely not put as much care in the result.

The verbiage borders on it, but the concept he's explaining is a valid one,
that there are a great many body shops that do good work, but not perfect
work. Perfect work is time consuming and expensive. Good work is easier,
cheaper, and can be done nearly anywhere.
For $1300 for a single dent you should be looking for perfection.
For less money, you *may* have to put up with less quality. Maybe you don't
care, maybe you do. That's your choice as a consumer.

HMMMM.......X5 = SUV = SPORT UTILITY vehicle........(or Stupid Urban
Vehicle)
So...if you bought it as such, it should be expected to be used as such,
therefore, dents. Live with it or get a real car?

Another echo... (on behalf of my UK and Germany experience). In both places
there are these dent-removal services, some utilised by main dealers.
I had my Merc keyed across two panels some months ago (deep parallel
scratches but no dent) and had a quote before claiming on the insurance, and
the sum was somewhat less than the USD 1300.

Hi
My e46 320i has a small dent. I was quoted R 4000 (South Africa) to
repair. These people are approved by BMW. For this money they replace
the bonnet. In your currency it is about $650. |

Please read carefully - this shop is BMW approved and the local BMW
refers you to this shop........

Your bonnet was also probably made in South Africa. The OP is in
Maryland, USA. I believe many US dealers charge an average $100 / hr.
labour rate. What's the labour rate in your South African BMW dealer?
With body work, it's usually the labour that costs the most over here.
The amount of work involved also depends on where the dent is and how
deep - in some spots they have to cut out the panel before repairing it
or replace it by welding a new panel. It is sometimes the only way to
get a "perfect" repair before they repaint. The other way is to pull
out a dent but you have to use some bondo and even if the bondo doesn't
pull back over time when you sell the car any person worth their salt
will spot the repair with no difficulty. Taking out a dent without
leaving a trace often doubles the cost.
USD 1,300 for a dent repair is not unusual but I am stating in the
general sense and one should always get several quotes and ask the
repair person exactly how they intend to do the repair. If the
techniques are different you can understand the price differences.
Most people are afraid to ask these questions - don't hesitate to ask
fair questions. BTW, some non-BMW-affiliated body shops do better
work than the BMW-affiliated ones.
Body repairs are not at all like replacing a worn part in the engine
compartment. Any body work or paintjob will have a greater element of
workmanship involved. It can be tough to determine if the price is
right. It wouldn't hurt to walk up to the repair person to check him
out and to let him know who you are but there's no guarantee. Body
repair can be a pain. Sometimes, with an older car, it's best to live
with a less-than-perfect repair if you intend to drive the car till it
drops. |

A far better job than what? A good body guy is a good body guy,
regardless of the car he works on. By *your* logic, I don't want a
'bimmer' body guy working on my Bentley.
Come to think of it, you're probably right...
Ironic - my spell checker wants to change 'bimmer' to 'bummer.'
