What amazes me is the genetic engineering stuff that is going on
recently. When I was a kid in the thirties vegetables only grew
in the ground, fruit only grew and trees and buffalos did not
have wings and chickens didn't have fingers ;)

Darn, I love being a senior citizen!

Well, it's OT, not marked as such and I'm not a senior citizen but I agree
with this one. Unlike the junk sold today, I was around when it was possible
to make a computer with components of your choosing.,Gates wasn't pretending
to be a "Software Architect", Balmer knew his public speaking sucked and,
thankfully, Intel didn't own the CPU market. As it should be, Bush was drunk
24/7 and thus, relatively harmless.

Why don't you go to a high school or college and see what

kids are accomplishing these days before you make this
kind of judgment? You'd be surprised at the level
these kids are competing at. You just hear about the
bad. You never had to learn half of what most these kids
do now.

But my in-laws, living in Madison
have problems finding someone to do basic carpentry. I guess this will
be
another job that we will have to import.

Lets see them try to oursource that to india :)

They're importing it from Mexico. Most of the builders around
here hire mostly Mexicans at a fraction of union carpenter wages.
A big reason the quality of most new homes built are crap now.
We don't value craftsmanship in this country any more and are
willing to destroy the unions and the journeyman process that
keep standards high in favor of unskilled cheap Mexican labor.
There are some good independent carpenters, but a good
carpenter with a good reputation is rare and booked up solid.

Union workers does not necessarily mean quality. We had office space rebuilt
at a cost of 2 million dollars. All union workers, down to the movers - even
they were union. End result? Pretty bad. The check list of items to be
re-done is getting to be 5 pages now. These are not small items.

Some of the best craftsmen are non-union, but they are hard to get and
command top dollar.

I get an idea of what you mean. To bring this a little on topic.

Anyone remember what a panel beater is?

Remember the old guy in the back of the body shop, surrounded by strange
hammers, shot filled bags, and english wheels, and body rollers. Could
make a new exact fit panel for any car, by eye in a day, no matter how
complicated. or could make a crease in a panel disappear with a few
quick taps with a hammer (or so it seemed). Now they are one stop quicky
shops, you drive in, you get a cup of coffee, and hey presto it's done
with plastic filler (what ever happened to proper body leading?). It's
weak, it may shrink and the paint will be a close but not exact match.

Reason, because those places don't want quality, so the panel beaters
either retired, or went to work for mobile "Paintless dent repair"
companies, but getting bored, having to charge way over the top, but
getting paid average prices, and only getting to use a very minor subset
of their skills that took a lifetime (sometimes) to master.

Proper metal on metal body repair is something I would love to learn,
but I really don't thing there would be a big enough market to charge
the proper price for the quailty of work I would want to put out.

I don't know what it is like in the US, but that is the way it is going
in the UK.

I disagree heartily!

The Mexican and Cuban workers here in Florida are first rate!

We often hear of how high the unemployment rate is in the US.
The truth is much closer to what you have posted. How many
Engineers, Doctors, Dentist, Scientist, and craftsmen do you know
of that are immigrants that sill have an accent? The only thing
we seem to be producing in the US in large numbers are lawyers.
In our case we are looking to higher skilled automotive techs,
with electronics training for a union position in our shops that
has a pay scale that can approaches or even exceeds six figures
it some of our shop locations. Many show up with the credentials
but they can not pass the skill test required by our union
contract. Talk to most any employer that you know and they will
tell you they could higher many more employees if they could only
find some that have a skill of some sort. Many would be glad to
acquire employees that they can simply train to do a job, or one
that will come to work or at least come to work on time and stay
through the balance of the shift. The problem today is there are
many unskilled workers but they expect to work for skilled
workers rates, not at unskilled worker rates. They would rather
get a government check. Many highly skilled jobs are going
wanting in the US. Many of those that can be, like engineering
work, analytical work in industry and in medicine, are being sent
off shore to countries like India because skilled workers there
are plentiful, not necessary lower in cost.

I think kids today are a lot smarter than kids of yesteryear. When I was in
high school in Chicago, the only thing I cared about is getting home without
getting into another fight. Now, kids are actually learning. I hire college
students all the time, and they simply blow away older folks in terms of
picking up technology and other things. So if you invented the tech, maybe
you should have stuck around to learn how to use it?

but now we don't have enough skilled carpenters, brick layers, plummers
electricians ect. Try and find one and when you do be ready to fork out
some serious dough.

I have a half dozen grand children that I am sending through
college, believe me I see what they are being taught. THAT is
the larger problem. Thank goodness my grand children are smart
enough to do what it takes to make the Prof. happy and get the
grade but then do what they know is right instead, when they get
out in the real world. ;)
