A college student challenged a senior citizen, saying it was impossible
for their generation to understand his. "You grew up in a different
world," the student said. "Today we have television, jet planes, space
travel, nuclear energy, computers..."

Taking advantage of a pause in the student's litany, the geezer said,
you're right. We didn't have those things when we were young; so we
invented them! What the hell are you doing for the next generation??"

Darn, I love being a senior citizen!

Well, it's OT, not marked as such and I'm not a senior citizen but I agree
with this one. Unlike the junk sold today, I was around when it was possible
to make a computer with components of your choosing.,Gates wasn't pretending
to be a "Software Architect", Balmer knew his public speaking sucked and,
thankfully, Intel didn't own the CPU market. As it should be, Bush was drunk
24/7 and thus, relatively harmless.

There are options, if you can "think outside of the box". Does AMD and
IBM sound familiar? They are making CPUs as well - read something
besides a biased liberal newspaper and you will learn the whole story,
not just what the liberal rags want you to know.
You can still build a computer, with the component of your choice - if
you have the ability.

BTW - there are other operating systems besides Windows . . . Got to get
back to a real OS - UNIX!

I think kids today are a lot smarter than kids of yesteryear. When I was in
high school in Chicago, the only thing I cared about is getting home without
getting into another fight. Now, kids are actually learning. I hire college
students all the time, and they simply blow away older folks in terms of
picking up technology and other things. So if you invented the tech, maybe
you should have stuck around to learn how to use it?

AMD emulates what instruction set? No go. IBM makes lots of CPUs. I'll
assume you're referring to the PCC stuff that Apple uses. Apple is as
proprietary as it gets. Sure can't make one of those on your own. Jobs is a
less rich Gates clone. No go.

Last I heard, UNIX was owned by SCO. Surely no go there. The BSDs are nice.
Linux is ok if you have to.

but now we don't have enough skilled carpenters, brick layers, plummers
electricians ect. Try and find one and when you do be ready to fork out
some serious dough.

Agreed, but you can still tap the resources of a lot of immigrants that are
fantastic. Living around Chicago, there are thousands of Polish contractors
that are fantastic and do not cost much. But my in-laws, living in Madison
have problems finding someone to do basic carpentry. I guess this will be
another job that we will have to import.

They're importing it from Mexico. Most of the builders around
here hire mostly Mexicans at a fraction of union carpenter wages.
A big reason the quality of most new homes built are crap now.
We don't value craftsmanship in this country any more and are
willing to destroy the unions and the journeyman process that
keep standards high in favor of unskilled cheap Mexican labor.
There are some good independent carpenters, but a good
carpenter with a good reputation is rare and booked up solid.

Union workers does not necessarily mean quality. We had office space rebuilt
at a cost of 2 million dollars. All union workers, down to the movers - even
they were union. End result? Pretty bad. The check list of items to be
re-done is getting to be 5 pages now. These are not small items.

That is surely the cast here in southern CA too.

The only thing they have to pass on to the next generation is rap
music. Talk about an oxymoron ;)
