Help - with check engine light |
|
|
97 toyota avalon ran rough after turning on ignition, then "check engine "
light came on... it has been running ok since, but light still on.
Can we turn it off? I'd like to reset it, to see if it's still an ongoing
problem
Thanks, Robin

To reset it, unplug your ECU fuse for about a minute. You can get the |
same effect with disconnecting your battery but you'd have to reset
your clock and radio memory. The light will come on again though if
the problem is still there. If the light comes on again, I suggest
you have the car looked at. |

Robin, ignore it, its doing a check when you drive. It the problems |
really is gone, the light will go out. If it doesnt soon, the problem is
still there. And from expereince, I'd guess you have a failed O2 sensor
on the bank near the firewall. ;D The rought running was probably
unrelated. I suspect an injector dribbled and fill a cylinder with a
little extra fuel. Happens from time to time.

You don't want to ignore this. Could be a significant problem. The website http://msn.autos.com has this to say about the engine in 1997 Avalon's (listed as having **significant** engine problems):
Quote:
Occasional problems on this vehicle are failures of the Engine and the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Lift Sensor. Failure of the Engine is caused because the engine oil gels. Engine oil gelling will also cause excessive engine oil usage. When proper maintenance schedules for oil changes are followed, oil gelling should not occur. Toyota has issued an 8 year unlimited mileage goodwill repair for this condition. Failure of the EGR Lift Sensor will cause a drivability problem or the check engine light to illuminate. The cost to repair the Engine is estimated at $4,500.00 for parts and $1,384.50 for labor. The cost to repair the EGR Lift Sensor is estimated at $33.12 for parts and $65.00 for labor. All prices are estimates based on $65 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax. |

Correction on link. It is http://autos.msn.com
Look in upper left corner where you can key in used, Toyota, Avalon then go to 1997 Avalon, click on Ratings and Reviews section then click on engine problems to see the above quoted info |
