My wife's 2004 Corolla has a little compartment
immediately below the heater controls in the center
console that's closed by a little downward-swinging
door. The right side hinge of that little door is now
messed up such that the door does not close cleanly
but instead protrudes on the right side instead of
being flush with the rest of the console. Is there a
recall issued for this? or has anybody else seen this
failure? If I were inclined to try to repair myself it
can anybody explain how to properly remove that portion
of the center console? I looked around briefly but
couldn't see any obvious releases or screws or such.

Isn't this car still under warranty?

If so, I would take back to the dealer and see if they will fix it.

I would trying giving it a little push to see if that would move it in.

A RECALL is for safety related systems that could/have caused collisions.

The center portion of the console is EASY to remove. Only tools needed are
puddy knife, a Phillips screw driver, and your fingers.

BTW, those compartment doors are not intended to support weight... DUH

OK - thanks. If not a recall then maybe a TSB (Technical Service
Bulletin, at least that's what the VW folks call them) but at any rate
I'm not inclined to pay for repairs when something is known to have
failed for reasons of materials or workmanship.

Who says it's a defect in materials or worksmanship? More likely a failure
to navigate about the car's interior like a prudent human being instead of a
clumsy oaf. But I digress.

Let's a least give the guy some instructions so that he can determine
if it is a defect or not.

If my memory serves me correctly you need to first unsnap the gear
shifter trim bezel (gently pry it up with the putty knife). Then
remove the center nob which is for the fan control and remove the
philips screw that is behind it.
Then unclip the climate control bezel/pocket assembly, there is a few
connectors on it as well.

Just an FYI, The return spring on the compartment below this door on
my 2004 Corolla broke, but fortunately I was able to get a new one
from the dealer.

Cheers

Isn't your 04 still under warranty? I recently had the sunvisor replace on
my 03 when the seam pulled open.

Much obliged - I'll give that a shot.

I always liked the Lucy Show episode where she went for an interview with
Mr. Mooney, the bank manager.

She's asked her name and she says,
"Lucille, with three 'L's..." <pregnant pause>
"...one at the beginning and two at the end."

Well, it was funny when I heard it.

Not to mention that our local namesake is pretty
much full of the same...

And you know from what?
