No I don't know what's wrong with it, and when the guy says there is
nothing wrong, even while you are driving down the road telling him there
is
something hitting your foot, and also says when I say I'd like to take it
to
a shop before going any further and , it has no insurance and he will be
out
of town for a week, all that starts to make you look elsewhere.

Having read the "independant" vehicle inspection report, I
would consider the vehicle unacceptable since the structural
damage was not properly repaired nor, were some of the welds
correctly done or proper refinishing completed. These are
serious problems well beyond the door which I find to be
acceptable on a leased vehicle. If that report is accurate,
I would do everything in my power to make the dealership eat
the sucker ASAP. I would not spend this many years of my
life picketing and getting even - it's too expensive. If
the insurance company can't/won't step in to correct the
problem, just sue the bastards! The problem with a leased
vehicle is the potential to have the vehicle appraised well
below what it would have been worth in the absence of prior
damage or improper repair at trade time. To me, improper
repair is less acceptable than a vehicle that has been
damaged and properly repaired. I have no problem with a
good used door properly repaired. Many insurance companies
will not use new parts beyond a certain age or mileage
unless the new parts are comparably priced. It would appear
that the adjuster built in a few freebies to make sure the
vehicle was properly repaired eliminating any excuses for
the vehicle to be slipshod reapired. |

one missing is "Volume 4, Body".
Anybody got Volume 4 for sale? eBay has only one "complete set".

Okay. I was assuming that somehow removing those rivets might weaken
the structure and result in a higher likelihood of watching my strut
rocket off into space or something. Not that the chances would be that
high, but higher than they would be if the rivets had been left in
place.
Umm...
i guess I can see that. Different (or lack of) "life experience" and all
that.
|
Lack of mechanical experience, yes. But I do have enough life experience
to know a smart ass when I see one. Not to say that I don't appreciate
your advice, and not to say I don't appreciate the rather dry sarcasm. The
issue is life experience. You're a smart ass. Not a judgment, just an
observation. :-P
| Quote: | In truth those rivets wouldnt hold a storm door closer bracket in place, let
alone a strut.

Strange that they'd put them there, but then their purpose has been
explained elsewhere.

| Quote: | Actually, it was due to a ham-fisted mechanic that mine is stripped. Went to
get some new tires at Costco, couple of weeks later I pulled off the hubcaps
to check the torque on the nuts, and noticed one had been put on cross
threaded (I'm guessing with a air-gun). The thread is totally fucked.
|
I was pleased to find out that the Wal-Mart I frequent for tires actually
torques the lugnuts. I saw him do it.
<anecdote>
My dad once went to a Pep Boys garage to have some work done and some
bolts needed to be torqued to complete the job. He was a mechanic, had
owned and worked on his own car since he was 8 years old, and owned his own
garage for several years, so he knows what's going on in these places. He
hasn't been able to do some kinds of work because of his arthritis in
recent years, so he hasn't kept up with the computerization of cars, but he
knows the basics and can give better and better advice the older the car
is.
Anyway, he saw a mechanic take after these bolts without a torque
wrench. My dad said, "Hey! Those need to be torqued!"
The mechanic said, "Well, we don't have a torque wrench."
My dad had one in the back of the car, so he set the torque and handed
it to the mechanic.
The guy starts twisting away. The wrench ticks and the guy just keeps
on turning it.
My dad says, "Hey! Didn't you hear it pop?"
"Yeah."
"Well, that means it's torqued!"
</anecdote>
Sometimes you just never know who's working on your car. I wonder if maybe
we should be able to decide which mechanic will actually work on our cars
-- pick the ones who have done good work in the past. Even a garage with a
bunch of good mechanics might hire a dumb-ass one day, and it might be the
day that you're in there to have some work done. :-)
