My 98 740iL recently developed a rattling noise when the car is put in
either drive or reverse. When in park or neutral, it is quiet. I'm
familiar with manual transmissions. Usually on those it would be the throw
out bearing in the clutch assembly that would cause this type of rattle. Is
there something in the torque converter similar to this? Could it be
something else entirely? I'm not as familiar with automatics so any help
would be appreciated.

TIA

Kyle.

Sure it's not due to an exhaust bracket near the tranny?

I'm pretty sure it's not a bracket. If the car is not moving and the shift
selector is moved from Park to Reverse (without moving the car) the rattle
starts. As the shifter is moved to Neutral, the rattle stops. It then
starts up again when its moved into Drive. For it to be an exhaust bracket
rattle, I would think the car would need to be either moving or if it was
being caused by engine vibration it would rattle as long as the engine is
running.

It could easily be an exhaust system bracket making this noise. It is a
harmonic frequency thing that occurs under a certain set of conditions,
standing at idle in R or D is among the conditions.
