I got a Mallory dual point distributor for my 68 MGB-GT and would like to
set up the dwell before installing the unit in the car.

According to instructions on the Mallory web site, I need to block the
trailing set of points and set the dwell on the leading set, then reverse
the procedure, then check the total dwell with both sets in operation. No
problem.

My goal is to accomplish this on the bench without frying the points. I
have a way to spin the distributor and several 12V power sources available
(trickle charger, battery charger and a 12V battery.) Any suggestions on
how to supply power so that the dwell can be checked without frying the
points would be appreciated.

Why not just do it on the car?
You can block one set of points with a piece of matchbook cover or similar
(maybe folded once or twice), set the dwell on it and repeat for the other
set.

The motor is not ready to go right now. My intention was to set up the
distributor now and then have it ready for later. (It also gets the
points into the distributor so I do not lose them on my v.messy workbench!)

Now if you could find someone with a
Sun Distributor machine, It would be
no problem.

Or a high performance, or hot rod shop.

This is a more complex distributor than mine, but couldn't you just
put a cigarette paper between the points to tell when they open and
close? That is how I synchronize two magnetos.

The procedure outlined by Mallory was to block one set of points, probably
with a matchbook cover, while setting one set of points then reversing the
process while setting the second set of points and then checking the total
dwell, which will be larger, with both sets of points being unblocked.
That is not the problem.

I was wondering about what power source to use while following this
process so that I do not fry my nice new, and expensive, Mallory points. :)

It is looking like I may just use a trickle charger to power the circuit.
Since they do not pass a lot of amperage, the chances of frying the
point ought to be less that using a battery.

Sorry - I deteted the original post so I'll just respond to this one.

This is not such a big deal. Just set the points with a feeler guage for
now. That will get the engine running nicely when you are ready. Then when
it is in the car and running the match book idea will let you fine tune the
point gap. If the gap is set right, with the feeler guage, then the dwell
will be very close.

I use a Sun Distributer Machine but if using a home made setup you can
avoid frying points by substituting a 12 volt light bulb for the coil
(which draws minimal current and wont fry points). Dwell meter only
measures time points are closed and not current. This should work.
