And we have a whole NEW problem!!! |
|
|
I have GOT to get rid of some of these cars!!!!
Now, the Supra. Timing belt on, removed coil ("Igniter"?) wire and checked
for unusual noises, reattached wire and fired it up! What a smooth
sounding engine!
Today we finished reassembly and added coolant, etc and took it out for a
'maiden voyage'. Well....
Right off the bat. Sluggish performance. By that I mean NONE! Engine
purring away, car going nowhere. Drop down to 2nd (Automatic) and away we
go. LOVE the sound of the 7M-GE! Hey, how fast ARE we going?! NO SPEEDO!
Then I see the flashing "O/D Off" light. I click the switch a few times,
no avail. We hit first, second and third, but no 4th or OD. Kinda feels
like it's slipping, too.
Now, seeing as this is an ECT, I figure the speedo has something to do
with the tranny shifting. The mech who put the timing belt in says that
the GMs he works on default to 3rd gear when the speedo quits. Sure seems
like that's exactly what this is doing.
I can shift manually no prob, 1,2,3, but no OD or anything above 3rd.
I would consider replacing the auto with a 5 speed (I'd rather have the 5
speed) but that provides me with another, minor problem: I ran the wiring
for the amps through the pass through for the clutch cylinder...
Hopefully, this is a common problem and there is a quick fix? In all my
years, I have never had a Toyotya automatic go bad on me, just minor
things like sensors, etc.

You might be missing a solenoid. There is 2, if one is missing, you will
be missing a couple of gears. Slipping is because its starting in to
high of a gear.
|
Yeah. Once I started shifting manually, it went better. Why the loss of
O/D? The solenoid? Can you tell me where I should be looking (external to
engine? External to Transmission? UGH: Internal?) or wiring or vacuum or...
The canister purge hose is disconneted and plugged, any relavance?
Thanks for the responce. |

That flashing OD light is trying to tell you something is wrong with the
auto, most likely electrical, or a stuck solanoid. You need to short
your diagnostics block to retrieve the error code which will tell you
exactly what is wrong with your auto. I can't remember the points in the
diagnotic block to short, but if you really need them give me an e-mail
and i'll tell you what to do.
MA70 supras are lovely cars. best of luck with it. |

Dittos, it will tell you which code and that will in turn, point you
right where you need to go. Short the terminals TC and E1 in the engine
room and with the OD on, read the blinks.

OK. A lot of my other Toys have a connector near the pass side fender, and
I have a jumper I made up for this. This car doesn't have that connector;
on the driver's side there is a connector under a cover labeled
'Diagnostics'. If I remember correctly, there are 2 sets of contacts, 2
rows each. I know I have a site bookmarked for this connector, but i just
want to double check which terminal I jumper... |

There is a total of 3 solenoids. One is just for lock up, the other 2
are for your 4 speeds:
1st S1-on S2-on
2nd S1-off S2-on
3rd S1-on S2-off
OD S1-off S2-off
They are visable by just removing the pan and are usually identical
between the 2. Measure resistance, it should be about 15 ohms, plus or
minus maybe 5 ohms. There is usually a 6 pin connector going to the
tranny, you can measure them from that connector. But for you, it may be
just easier to measure them at the solenoid itself. They will break down
with age and go open. Witht he above chart I have, you can figure out
which one is bad. If you have OD and 2nd, but missing 1st and third, we
can assume you are missing solenoid # S2. |

manually shifting an automatic won't harm it - so I would
do this. |

Yes, to get trannie codes, its TC and E1, when you check engine codes or
set timing, you used TE and E1, so it will be different. You must have
OD on so you can see the light blink. You will also get blinks from the
cruise light, ingore it. |

OK...here's the deal: I can shift manually, 1,2,D. With each shift it goes
up a gear. Now, the kicker. I tried starting out in 2; a few times it
shifted 1,2,3 and a few times it shifted 2,3. No O/D, and sometimes skips
1. If I start in D, O/D on or off, it starts in 3rd, no 1,2 or O/D. O/D
*never* comes on.
|
Well, there is a difference between manual 1,2 vs "D" 1 and 2. I suspect
you have a solenoid that is gone. Next step would be to measure resistance. |

Two problems: it doesn't go into Overdrive, and I think from all the
manual shifting (the girl before me owned it for about a year) it seems
the U-joints have had it. You know, that nice *CLUNK* when it makes the
transition from one gear to the next. |

Well, *crap* it snowed today, and I don't feel like freezing my tootsies
getting the codes. AND, with the garage filled with 'hachiroku' parts, I
don't have room right now (we're working on that. I have about a half a
dumpster's worth of CRAP to get rid of already...). Supposed to be about
55 day after tomorrow; so, have a list of codes handy (or, perhaps a link?
I can't find one: Google isn't my friend this time :( |

OK. Don't have a garage or lift to use right now. Perhaps by the end of
the week I'll be able to sort it out. It has already snowed; this car
probably won't move again until the roads are nice and dry! (Maybe, April?!)
I wish I knew about this while we had it at the shop; my mechanic could
have done this in about 5 minutes (my boss rents the bay to him, it's
*his* lift, so I don't mess with it...) |

Here's some interesting information I got from a Russian web site, and
something I was going to track down:
1) After repairing the electrical fault all diagnostic codes must be cleared from the ECU.
Cancel the codes by removing the correct fuse for 10 seconds or more with
the engine OFF See FUSE APPLICATION table. Fuse may have to be removed for
longer period of time depending on ambient temperature.
FUSE APPLICATION TABLE
Application Fuse Block Marking Fuse Amp
Cressida A-340A EFI 20
Lexus LS 400 A-341E EFI 20
Pickup & 4Runner:
A-340E, A-340F & A-340H EFI 15
Supra A-340E DOME 20
^^^^^ ^^^^^^ ^^^^ ^^
I have NO dome light. Now, I thought this was a problem with the bulbs, or
a short (the targa, or "sport Roof" leaks.) Now, with the doors open ,the
lights in the doors come on, and with the hatch open, the trunk light
comes on, but there is no 'dome' light. I don't have a Check Engine
light; does the ECU control the transmission as well, or is there a
separate control box for the tranny? Also, it seems when the light stops
flashing, I can use the electric door locks, but when the light is
flashing I can't. Are these also on the same circuit? Since the dome light
is always energized, and the locks also are always energized... |

Kick down cable in an electronically controlled tranny? It only controls
