Bush is gonna appoint Bolton (who is a 'take no shit' guy) to the

The 'Donald' has offered his services to oversee the rebuilding of the UN

With Bolton and 'the Donald' in there...I'd say the problems will be

LOL! I saw that today during one of my many Water Breaks (with this

They have their place and purpose.

Bolton is one....an a damned good one...

Thank you Scott for proving Richard right, although I doubt that was your
intent. UNICEF gets the highest rating, four stars. 87.3% of donations
goes towards programs. I guess this link shows UNICEF is a very, very
efficient program.

bb

You missed the point of my arguement. Yes, the donations go towards
programs. But the programs are mismanaged. Out of 100% of food going to
Africa, 1/3 spoils and 1/3 gets stolen, mostly by the governments
governing the people who are SUPPOSED to be getting the aid, and out of
the stolen rations, most of that gets sold to buy arms. So, UNICEF is
using 87.3% of their donations for programs, but the output is nowhere
near mathcing the input.

Send in the Marines! Oooooh-Rah!

Well there ya go -- the Hill is threatening to strangle NPR, so naturally
they start becoming... how shall I say... more "Fair and Balanced"?

I'm sure whomever did that report had a barf bag on hand for those
"retakes", if you dig

And it also turns out, that while NPR has it's hand out to Congress, that
most listeners are better educated, and more wealthier than 'users' of
other News sources.

So where the hell did *I* take the wrong turn?!

It's funny, because I notice a lot that when there is a bad Liberal in the
White House (ie, Carter and Clinton) NPR turns more to the Right, and when
there is a bad Conservative in office (you have ONE guess ONLY...) they
turn more to the Left.

Right now they are fairly middle-of the road, or leaning 'slightly' to the
left...

It was funny during the Reagan years; they were Left up until the shooting
and then started turning Right until George the 1st got elected...Then it
was Hard Left Rudder!!!

Consider UMCOR.

From the website:
"When you give to the United Methodist Committee on Relief you can
be
sure that your money will go where you want it to go. One hundred
percent of your tax-deductible gifts go to the emergency or project
that you designate. UMCOR's administrative costs come from other
sources, especially the United Methodist One Great Hour of Sharing
offering."

I would trust the church less than any other source.

Did you read this? From an article where 4 were hit by lightning, but
the last of the article which I've pasted below is what got me steamed.

"The Jamboree runs through Aug. 3, with President Bush scheduled to
speak Wednesday evening. Scouts ages 12-18 are to spend 10 days camping
in tents and taking part in activities that include archery, fishing and
a GPS-based scavenger hunt.
The Boy Scouts of America have held the event since 1937 with the next
gathering set for 2010, the Scouts' 100th anniversary. It may not be
held at Fort A.P. Hill, which has hosted the event since 1981.
A federal judge recently ruled that the Pentagon can no longer
financially support the event. If the ruling stands, the Boy Scouts
would have to find another location for their next gathering.
A lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois
contends that the Defense Department's sponsorship violates the First
Amendment because the Scouts require members to swear an oath of duty to
God."

Another reason we need to fire these judges and get some new ones.

Take a read on the unicef sites - a big budget and damned little

programs. Cry for more money=fatter salaries=less good work.

No matter where it is, the inability of a country to feed itself is bound
to bring untold suffering.

And the spending of money to wage civil wars against other tribes counts
in, too. Heard this on the same NPR report I heard the failed deliveries
on. Especially in the case of the Hutus and the Tootsies (I really don't
care how it's spelled, every time I hear a news story about it, all I can
think is "Hutu, Tootsie, Goodbye...")

They could easily solve ALL their own problems if they would stop buying
armaments and start using the money to grow crops. Africa has gone from
one of the world's largest EXPORTERS of food to one of the biggest
IMPORTERS. And, in the SAME report on NPR, the person making th report
noted that, with a climate similar to Australia, they too could grow
plenty of sheep, export the wool and use the profits to feed themselves.

Let the wars end first. Then talk about sending food. Send in the Marines!

There, uh, you go, uh, picking on, uh, the Wizard of, er, uh, Uh's

More people have died in Ted Kennedy's car than by inhaling Whipits!

(Wizard Of Uh's, stolen from Howie Carr; http://www.howiecarr.com )

The Wizard of Uh's is a contest, usually run after Teddy has appeared on
Meet The dePRESSed or made a 'big' speech in Congress. He plays a 20
second or so segment and you have to count the number of times he says
"uh".
"Er's" don't count, "uh-uh-uh" counts as three. See link above...

It beats listening to Dick the Duck *PL*ucker Durbin, our senator. And
his non-apology apologies. And his non-explaination explanations.
Kennedy's been there long enough to be a disgrace to his brothers. Durbin
is a nobody from nowhere. He's a nothingburger with no fries and no

Bummer - do you have a link regarding this?

Pick any search engine, news site, etc.

As I said he has absolutely no idea what he's talking about.

Do a search on the UN, food
for oil, Annan, or any other key word. You will

find that the UN and UNICEF are loosely related at best.

Here are a couple of links that unequivocally support my assertion:

http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm/bay/search.summary/orgid/4617..htm
[gives a breakdown of how UNICEF money is distributed]

http://www.give.org/seal.asp?ID=851312005
[the BBB Wise Giving Alliance seal of approval]

Don't get me wrong -- spread your charity around.

I just know that right now UNICEF is at the center of Food Aid in
Bagdhad, Niger, and other hot spots around the world.

Oh, and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF is operated under the auspices of the
United STATES.

Natalie: All charitable organizations can be suspect. How money is
distributed is a big deal for me, since I'd like to get more bang for the
bucks, but in the end, every little bit helps for most charities.

Oh, and I agree 100%. I don't have a whole lot of cash to give away,
so I am very careful about which charities I support. I am very
concerned that every dollar I give is put to the best possible use.
And a lot of times it is just that, a few dollars. No tax benefit
here!

Just a few bucks helps:

[CITE:unicefusa.org sidebar]
What your money can buy
$17 can immunize a child against the major childhood diseases.
$40 can provide blankets to protect ten small children from the cold.
$60 can provide vaccines to protect 60 children from a preventable
disease, measles, for life.
$150 can buy a handpump, pipes and accessories to install a shallow
well to benefit up to 250 people.
$500 can provide enough vitamin A capsules to protect 16,666 young
children from blindness and improve their overall health for one year.
[/CITE]

Oh yes, and check the shopping link -- I've picked up some really nice
gifts and greeting cards there. I like the thought that I'm paying
folks for their work. After all, thats what we humans like to do --
engage in good old commerce.

And, as we've seen time and again in Iraq, "idle hands are the devil's
workshop" [Chaucer, among others].

Me: There, wasn't that much more pleasant (And helpful) than blasphemy and
ignominy?

more BORING maybe.

Actually you thank God in the name of Jesus Christ, and it doesn't take

Yeah well... I had to stand in one of those food lines once, when I was
a runaway teen living on the streets (yep -- I was 17 at the time, that
would've been 1985), and I did pass out during the Jesus talk.

There was a 3 minute sermon followed by a lengthy prayer... last thing
I remember is bowing my head, and the next thing I know I was sitting
in a chair with some lady giving me water.

I was HUNGRY for FOOD, not FORCED PROSELYTIZATION.

They did at least get the food to me (and it was gross as hell) -- but
that was the FIRST and LAST time I turned to Jesus's self-appointed
personal representatives to help me when I was down and out.

You don't know much do you?

Just as it's unfair to judge all liberals as kooks, it's equally unfair to
judge all Christians by the acts of a small percentage. There are jerks in
every group, just by the law of averages, but your experiences do not
define
what *all* 'Jesus representatives' are.

The very label "Liberal" has become a coded insult anyway.

**Not to me; most of my friends and family are liberal

I'm truly a "Progressive". I'm a baptised and saved Christian. I'm
also the sole breadwinner for my family, I believe in many "Traditional
Family Values", and to make matters worse, I don't even think that
mothers (or the "mother partner") in families should work until their
kids are at least in grammar school. I expect a hot meal on the table
when I come home from work, and clean socks in the morning. My wife
concurs.

**It's great that you two agree on that - I think a mom who's forced to be at
home will not be a good mom. She'll be resentful; it should be her choice to
stay home with the kids, not an edict. We'll have to agree to disagree on
that one too.

I think most radical feminism is the Scourge of American Family Values,
and PETA ... well I'd be happy to invite them over for some greasy
Southern-fried soul food. Hell we throw three species of animal bones
in the collards baby.

**With ya on that one! PETArds have mostly the right ideas, IMO, just
unacceptable tactics. What they did to Roy Horn was unconscientiable.

So -- whenever I see folks like Scott and this Mark character, or that
"Mike Kunt" guy try to pigeonhole me as a "Liberal Kook", I have to
chuckle.

**You pigeonhole them too, Richard; they're not the only guilty party here.
I resist labeling people, since it's not even a sound way to interact with
others. Jerks are jerks, regardless of affiliation or background.

So Richard, was it before or after your redemption that you learned to

you didn't have to dig too much for that did ya?

"I hate White-ass, well off fuckers like you Eric, who have never had
to
strain a single fucking day in your life, and who exhibit the hypocrasy

and sit in judgement from your stinking ass SUV and 4,000 sq foot house

while Iraqi children are having their faces blown off, and true

you insist on supporting and his administration's pathological,

Saved and Baptized? Traditional Family Values? You might want to
rethink your position, it's all here in black and white...

its anything but "black and white".

But that's what you did when you called Eric those things. (Where *is* that
guy, anyway?!).

In those comments, you've effectively labeled every middle-class white male
as the devil. Simply isn't so. My hubby's a peach, for instance :-)

There is plenty more that both sides could be doing for the world, but in the
end, most of us just help ourselves. Sophistry passes the time, but doesn't
get a damned thing done.
