Natalie, have you set up your newsreader to post in this fashion? It
is rather confusing to follow your comments since your newsreader is
not changing the level of quoting from the previous poster.

As I said he has absolutely no idea what he's talking about.
Do a search on the UN, food

find that the UN and UNICEF are loosely related at best.
Here are a couple of links that unequivocally support my assertion:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm/bay/search.summary/orgid/4617.htm
[gives a breakdown of how UNICEF money is distributed]
http://www.give.org/seal.asp?ID=851312005
[the BBB Wise Giving Alliance seal of approval]
Don't get me wrong -- spread your charity around.
I just know that right now UNICEF is at the center of Food Aid in
Bagdhad, Niger, and other hot spots around the world.
Oh, and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF is operated under the auspices of the
United STATES.
Natalie: All charitable organizations can be suspect. How money is
distributed is a big deal for me, since I'd like to get more bang for the
bucks, but in the end, every little bit helps for most charities.
|
Oh, and I agree 100%. I don't have a whole lot of cash to give away,
so I am very careful about which charities I support. I am very
concerned that every dollar I give is put to the best possible use.
And a lot of times it is just that, a few dollars. No tax benefit
here!
Just a few bucks helps:
[CITE:unicefusa.org sidebar]
What your money can buy
$17 can immunize a child against the major childhood diseases.
$40 can provide blankets to protect ten small children from the cold.
$60 can provide vaccines to protect 60 children from a preventable
disease, measles, for life.
$150 can buy a handpump, pipes and accessories to install a shallow
well to benefit up to 250 people.
$500 can provide enough vitamin A capsules to protect 16,666 young
children from blindness and improve their overall health for one year.
[/CITE]
Oh yes, and check the shopping link -- I've picked up some really nice
gifts and greeting cards there. I like the thought that I'm paying
folks for their work. After all, thats what we humans like to do --
engage in good old commerce.
And, as we've seen time and again in Iraq, "idle hands are the devil's
workshop" [Chaucer, among others].

ignominy? I knew you'd agree

Consider UMCOR.
From the website:
"When you give to the United Methodist Committee on Relief you
can be
sure that your money will go where you want it to go. One hundred
percent of your tax-deductible gifts go to the emergency or
project that you designate. UMCOR's administrative costs come
from other sources, especially the United Methodist One Great
Hour of Sharing offering."
http://gbgm-umc.org/umcor/info.stm
I would trust the church less than any other source.
Typical asshole reply from a secular humanist "legend in his own
mind"
asshat.
Since United Way has started up this "anti-Boy-Scout" thing a decade
ago,
they haven't got a dime from me. If they're anti-decency and
pro-gay, I'm
not wasting my money there. Besides I know how they work. I had a
friend
who worked on the inside one year and explained how it all got
'used'. Never again. They can pry the money from my cold, dead hand,
but they're
going to have to wait in line.
I've seen the inside of the United Way, also....and won't give a dime
to them.
The Salvation Army is my main charity.
I don't buy a damned thing at Target anymore, since they would not let
the bell ringers out in front of their stores last year.
Charles of Kankakee
Did you read this? From an article where 4 were hit by lightning, but
the last of the article which I've pasted below is what got me steamed.
"The Jamboree runs through Aug. 3, with President Bush scheduled to
speak Wednesday evening. Scouts ages 12-18 are to spend 10 days camping
in tents and taking part in activities that include archery, fishing and
a GPS-based scavenger hunt.
The Boy Scouts of America have held the event since 1937 with the next
gathering set for 2010, the Scouts' 100th anniversary. It may not be
held at Fort A.P. Hill, which has hosted the event since 1981. A federal
judge recently ruled that the Pentagon can no longer financially support
the event. If the ruling stands, the Boy Scouts would have to find
another location for their next gathering. A lawsuit filed by the
American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois contends that the Defense
Department's sponsorship violates the First Amendment because the Scouts
require members to swear an oath of duty to God."
Another reason we need to fire these judges and get some new ones.
George W. Bush is hard at it...
No wonder the liberals 'hate' him...
He is bringing back 'reason' to America.

"Er's" don't count, "uh-uh-uh" counts as three. See link above... |

what's a dittohead?
A dittohead is an endearing term used to describe a listener of Rush
Limbaugh who agrees with what he says. The term was originally used by
Rush and his fans as a way to be part of "the club" and has now become a
somewhat derogatory term used by Limbaugh haters. It's not much
different than the word "redneck" and how people use it these days.
Those who are rednecks see nothing wrong with the word, and those who
look down upon rednecks use the word to belittle others.
I don't listen to rush limbaugh. I have in the past when the time was
right, but never paid that much attention. He's entertaining I guess. I
did like the G. Gordon Libby program. He was a gas and a half. No
station in the area carries him anymore.
Thanks.

Take a read on the unicef sites - a big budget and damned little
positives. UNICEF is a huge bloated bureacracy, typical of all UN
programs. Cry for more money=fatter salaries=less good work.
No matter where it is, the inability of a country to feed itself is bound
to bring untold suffering.

And the spending of money to wage civil wars against other tribes counts
in, too. Heard this on the same NPR report I heard the failed deliveries
on. Especially in the case of the Hutus and the Tootsies (I really don't
care how it's spelled, every time I hear a news story about it, all I can
think is "Hutu, Tootsie, Goodbye...")
They could easily solve ALL their own problems if they would stop buying
armaments and start using the money to grow crops. Africa has gone from
one of the world's largest EXPORTERS of food to one of the biggest
IMPORTERS. And, in the SAME report on NPR, the person making th report
noted that, with a climate similar to Australia, they too could grow
plenty of sheep, export the wool and use the profits to feed themselves.
Let the wars end first. Then talk about sending food. Send in the Marines!
