My niece used to tell me Newfie jokes. Some of them were pretty original
(Candian inside jokes) but most of them were just re-hashed Polak jokes
(apologies to any of Polish desent...) |

I'll bite. That's a new one on me.
My niece used to tell me Newfie jokes. Some of them were pretty original
(Candian inside jokes) but most of them were just re-hashed Polak jokes
(apologies to any of Polish desent...)
I find these sort of jokes are mostly (*mostly*) the same the world over,
which is great because they are very portable and easily adaptable to your
chosen target group. Often they center on the supposed (or actual)
stupidity of the target group.
Iranians make them about the Turks
Czechs make them about the Slovaks
Swedish make them about the Norwegians
Canadians make them about the Newfies
Texans make them about the aggies
etc, etc, etc.
I think the Polack jokes originate from the Chicago area, but are just the
same old ones that have been recycled for generations everywhere.
Examples:
1) Did you hear about the Newfie who tried to swim the Atlantic ocean? He
got tired half way across, so he turned around and swam back home again.
2) If a Newfie and a Canadian both jumped out of an airplane with no
parachute, who would hit the ground first? The Canadian. The Newfie would
stop to ask for directions.
See? You could put anything in place of "Newfie" and it would work.

Ah, now it makes a LOT more sense, thanks. This also explains a recent
thread in can.internet.highspeed, where somebody came in asking how many
Web design firms there were in Canada (like anybody knows). Some wag
answered "42". It sounded funny anyway, but now I'm sure I know where he
came up with that number.
Never read that book, although my wife has and it's sitting in a bookshelf
near me now.
Canadian TV carries PBS, so it would have been available to me back then.

T told us if you lived to 18 in the South Side you were one tough
dude!

I lived in Roseland until 1967, when I was 10. The neighborhood has changed
a lot since then. My dad went to high school 1942-46 at Fenger. His dad
lived all his life in Roseland. I found them in the 1930 census.
