e34: service indicator lights |
|
|
i read up a few different ways of resetting service indicator lights and
tried them out. I did the thing with making a jumper wire and grounding one
of the pins (pin 7 for 3 secs, i think). this only half worked - the little
clock icon on the dash has gone, but the service bars remain where they
were. any pointers? 1989 e34, 530.

On older cars - not sure of dates - you simply ground pin 7 with the
ignition off, then switch on and off after the appropriate lights have
gone off. IIRC, the service ones first.

I held pin 7 to ground for several seconds, and my lights all reset. I think
the reset happens over time, and it takes more than 3 seconds to elapse to
reset the entire counter/display. If you reset for too short of a period,
then you only get a partial reset. Go back and do it again, it should reset
the rest of the way.

i've read there are two time lengths - 3 secs and 11 secs. Tried holding the
jumper wire for over 11 seconds but no joy. weird. do all service bars have
to be showing for this to work? at present, i have 3 bars.

Use a paperclip.
I was using a regular wire and for some reason it wouldn't work, but with a
paperclip, no problem!

The idea of poking around inside what amounts to a computer port with a
paperclip fills me with dread.
For my brother's E28 I made up a lead with an in line socket (IIRC walkman
headphone type) which is a push fit on pin 7, a series resistor for
safety, and a crock clip which goes to ground. You then just switch on the
ignition until the appropriate lights go out.

On an E28 - or at least the one I had - you could ground pin 7 with the
ignition off, then sit inside the car, switch the ignition on and watch
the lights reset after about 3 seconds. Leave on longer to reset the
inspection light.

Yes, try doing the same procedure, but hold the ground on pin 7 for 5
seconds instead of 3 (counting one thousand one, one thousand two, etc.)
I find that three seconds is not quite long enough to reset the oil
service lights.

No, it doesn't work that way. The lights do not change state until you
release the push button (or remove the ground from pin 7).
Most instructions say 3 seconds for an oil service reset and 12 seconds
for the Service Inspection light. I find that 5 seconds works best for
the oil change lights (bars) and does not interfere with the SI timing.

done that and done it for even longer but still nada. like i said, i would
have thought it was a battery issue had the clock icon not been cancelled
(not sure what the clock icon is, but it showed up and then went away after
a go with the wire jumper thing).
will fanny around with the thing some more and see what happens. in the
scheme of things, it's not a big deal... - i do about 8k miles a year; an
engine service just before winter is probably a good idea with or without
the service indicator lights telling me so. i know it's more a question of
how hard (or not) the car is driven which defines when the lights come up
rather than routinised maintenance based on miles driven but for the most
part, i'm light footed so i guess i should be fine... unless others know
otherwise
thanks again to all who've taken the time

My technique was to to turn the ingnition ON, ground Pin 7 (using a jumper
with a resistor in line) for a few seconds, then go and look at the display.
It was cleared. Since I did the procedure on my own, I don't know when the
display cleared, but it said SERVICE INTERVAL (or whatever) when I started,
and showed 5 green bars when done.
I am pretty sure I managed to ground Pin 7 before the display went out as
the timer for the self test period expired, and I am not sure but I think
this part of the process is a requirement, that is Pin 7 has to be grounded
within the timer period. If the timer times out, the reset will not occur.
