BMW is recalling all E46 M3s built before March 2003, essentially for an
engine rebuild where they are replacing the con-rod bearing shells, which
may fail.

The official reason is that they have failed BMW's quality assurance test -
quite why it's taken this long to discover it is a mystery.

This will mean returning your car to the dealer and on return you will have
to run in the car once more.

There is no compensation and BMW is trying to keep it very quiet. Official
recall reference is 0011940100.

Tim. if you're in the UK (as I think) your dealers well behind if they've
just informed you, assuming you have an M3. This recalls been running since
August.

Thanks Tony - I am in the UK

Cannot say I'm happy with the dealers

When you go in to the dealers they still look at me as though I'm dirt
I refuse to wear designer wear just to impress a salesmanin his Hugo Boss
suit!

Also they are no different to any cheap/nasty brand dealer with lots of
tricks

Whoaaa!!! You're in danger of starting a whole new thread on that one, LOL

Dealers or $tealers, they can be a nightmare. I'm lucky in that my local
dealers are reasonable. Most of the staff treat me like dirt except for the
service manager, the receptionist and the one sales guy I deal with. All of
whom have known me since I bought my first when I was early 20's. I don't
actually own a suit anymore as I got out of the "real world" a few years
back. Unfortunately I think BMW dealers feel they are in an elevated
position which is definately not the case. Nice that even though I'll wear
my old jeans and fleece the dealer has booked their demo M5 out to me even
before they've got it any without asking if I want to try it.

Is it a recall or a service action?? In the US recalls were done
*years* ago. I asked every dealer I went to a year ago about engine
problems and all said there were none. I only got informed when I
booked my car in for an oil service.

The "compensation" I get is a discount on the oil in the oil service.
I hear in the US of customers get full tanks of petrol etc.

Yes in general dealers are scum. There's the BS face of the service
reps & salesmen up front then the kwik-fit reject monkeys out the
back.

I used to think that BMWs were reliable well built machines.

They are, but if you go to a BMW dealer you can have strange encounters of the 3rd kind,
even here in munich, where they are built;.)

Snip...

AFAIK there have been two recalls/service actions/whatever they want to call
them. The first was replacing the oil pump and checking/replacing bearings
on some cars. This was way back, more recently (Aug 04 in UK) a new recall
for all cars pre ?March '04? replacing bearings or engine if signs of
contamination.
