You are both morons.
BIMMER is what the car is called. BEEMER refers to the motorcycles.
All of you should just do some research instead of pissing out your
stupid
attempts at logic.
I'll remove the morons bit (being all humble and all) but will say that
a
highly reputable source close to me concurs with this.
So what's this "highly reputable source" then? Whatever it is, it's
wrong.

Well I have to admit, they don't come any more reliable than them.

Huh. I wouldn't call the guys in the bar "bikies". . . .
And, ALL the people I know call BMW automobiles "beemers" (unless they say
"BMW".
So, maybe in your neighborhood "beemer" doesn't mean the car. . . . .
|
My neighborhood is downtown NYC, and I haven't a clue.
I've never said "Beamer" or "Bimmer" in my life. I just came across this
thread, asked somebody who basically spent his entire high-school (and some
beyond) years working on, building, souping up, doing whatever the hell one
does with cars and motorcycles, owned a BMW that he totally revamped. So I
just asked him, and he said that bikes tend to be known as bimmers and cars
as beamers. I don't even think he called his *own* car a "bimmer" but he
used to hang out with those bikey types and this seems to be the common
"accepted" parlance among BMW enthusiasts. I didn't realize when I first
posted that I would be thrust into the debate of the century.
As for "bikies"..... I guess I was thinking about bikey bars or something.
Or whatever. I really don't know anything about this stuff, but live with
somebody who does. Maybe it is a regional thing.

What's a cager? Is that a BMW enthusiasts' term also?
It's a motorcyclists' pejorative for everyone who drives a car,
probably motivated by envy because we have the common sense to protect
ourselves adequately from road mishaps and they don't.
It's not a pejorative at all -- just a means of expressing the feeling of
freedom to be found on a bike.
Needless to say, most bikers also have cages. My wife's is a Bimmer.
Why does *everything* on USEnet have to be contentious?
Because no-one on Usenet can smack us through the monitor:-))

Not that I haven't tried to nail a few twerps in my time.
Doing so did move me away from CRT's to flat screen monitors. No, I don't
smack them. They cost too much. <G>

Here's a little (often quoted) statistic: 80% of all drivers think that
they are above average in their skills.
That's easily explained. From absurdly low speed limits and absurdly low
recommended speeds on curves, to warnings that amount to "crying wolf",
the highway authorities are constantly putting up signs that are insults
to most drivers' intelligence. Naturally, anyone who credits the highway
authorities with any common sense can only assume that the _average_
driver _needs_ all those silly signs. And if that's true, then you must
be an above average driver, right?
Drivers will start heeding signs when the signs stop "crying wolf". I'm
sure this is as true in Great Britain as it is in the USA.
There's a move afoot to remove lots of roadside furniture and ditch a lot
of the signs too, but right now, yes, it's ridiculous. Signs telling us to
slow down when the road opens up 2 seconds later. Signs saying "wiggly
road" when it's a "bit" obvious as the road parallels a winding river.
School signs are best. They show kids crossing the road, but the kids
don't CROSS the road, they PLAY in the road.
Those double white lines down the centre of the road are best though.
That's the road planners saying "We don't think this road is good enough
to overtake on". Whatever gave them the idea that we couldn't work that
one out for ourselves? Knobheads, those planners.

Yeah. I love to drive but I'm one of those people who couldn't know (or
care) less about car trivia and pissing contests. It's all
"shift-on-the-fly-twin-overhead cam engine" (huh?) gobbledygook to me. I
liked my grandfather's old Citroen even though the felt seats gave me bad
goose bumps (ech), and those convertibles called J-somethings (I
think....impressed yet?) and old Volkswagen Beetles. I used to like some
Jaguars until that gruesome phony continental female voiceover growled
"JAGG- YOU-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" like a cat in heat in the ads.
A friend just bought one of those 1970something BMWs that gets lots of guys
excited for some reason.
Still awake? Anyway, I'm pretty amused myself that I, who's about as
clueless as it gets when it comes to cars (now bicycles are another story),
would find myself being called a fucking dumbass shithead retard (I forget
the OP's exact articulation) for my involvement in this thread. I'd merely
read something here about beamer versus bimmer, asked my handy bike brainiac
what referred to what, and was given the ol' car/motorcycle reply. It was
all very innocent, but many seem to think I'm destined for the Spec Ed
track. |
